So what did you edit? Come on, I can take it. No, really ....... I figured somebody would latch on to that statement, and I was - am - curious as to what the correction might be. How far back DO "warbirds" go? When I wrote I was thinking about the CAF cranking up c. 1970 or thereabouts. About the only thing I will positively declare from direct experience is that airshows used to be much much better in the seventies than they are now. Sigh.

Yep, only about 20 years old at that point.
EDIT
As a "movement", yes around 1970 things were starting to "pop" in momentum Kurt, so true, not much earlier than that.

Been meaning to ask you, are you related to Ralp Maurer the early 20th century Galveston photograper?

I didn't edit anything out, but I did add a line after EDIT. The core of the CAF was started in the late 50's, so I was guesstimating about 20 years earlier than 1978. But you said warbird "movement"...where everybody it seemed was getting on the bus...was rolling pretty good by 1970. The first CAF gathering I attended was about 1963, with 6 or 7 birds attending..maybe a few more and saw Bill Fornoff and his Bear along with Bob Hoover a year or 2 later at NAS Dallas. Depends on how fine a point one wants to put on the subject...I'm just glad they're here and celebrated!

As for your question, "How far back DO "warbirds" go?", mmmm, post WW1 with the first surplus Jenny's, etc.? Farther back maybe...who bought the Jenny's that chased Pancho? The observation balloons surplus from The War of Nawthin Aggression? Of course, I'm sure our international friends have a few thoughts on the subject.

Seeing as how the Hamilton Air Show has been revived I thought I'd post a photo from its glorious past.

Who knows... we may see a similar quartet in the not too distant future - perhaps a quintet with the airworthy Boly.

Here you go then.
Visited the Ashburton Aircraft Museum (near Christchurch, New Zealand) on Sunday.
Here I am and their RAF Harrier which served in the Falklands war and was also flown by an ex RAF pilot who is now a Squadron Leader in the RNZAF and flies the Historic Flight aircraft (Tiger Moth, Harvard and MK IX Spitfire! Lucky lucky ba......).
Image

Their time capsule Harvard NZ1012 preserved in her original 1960s markings including the silver fernleaf roundel (which replaced the white version, too many white feather jokes lol)

And their latest aircraft a F8 Meteor! Restored in its RAAF markings. The RNZAF actually had a Meteor briefly post war.

And a cockpit from a RAF Canberra. Electrics all work and the nose gear retracts and extends.

Hope these help your desire for photos!! :D
