Hemiman, see if you can find out what squadron your friend's father-in-law was flying with at the time, and/or date, location, etc. A Bureau Number for the plane would be fun to know too! :D

Rob..

PM sent your way. He flew with VF-31 off the BELLEAU WOOD during the war, and participated on the attacks on the ships ISE, AOBA and the NAGATO.

 I didn't feel like taking the time to time warp the pilot. BUT, the aircraft no longer wears that paint, so I didn't lie. Hahaha!

actually, not a bad job at all.

It was the two civilian aircraft off either wingtip that gave it away!

Hey Chad, Here are a few of Han's planes at Glendale post stripping. I know Matt Gunsch might have a bunch since he was working for Hans for a while.

I wonder if the City of San Francisco with "Golden Gate" written on the bottom of the 41 section flew under the Golden Gate when leaving CONUS?

Well, that I can not verify, but I know for a fact he flew a BT-13 under several bridges in Arkansas in Spring of 1942 while on a cross country. I have the photos he took to prove it. He pranged something along the way and ended up making an emergency landing in Springfield, MO. He then met my future mother (she was 16 at the time)and came back to marry her in 1949.

Proves we do crazy, stupid things for a reason!

Was he training at Walnut Ridge during the BT-13 episodes?

Great photos, by the way.

Cool B-29 pics! What are the metal bands around the bombs?

Those were thermite incendiary bomb bundles meant to break open in the airstream after dropping to spread fire bombs as widely as possible. There is often seen footage of bundles rainig out of the bomb bay already seperated.
