AUSTRALIAN WAR MEMORIAL ACT 1980 - SECT 5 Functions of Memorial

(1) The functions of the Memorial are:

(a) to maintain and develop the national memorial referred to in subsection 6(1) of the Australian War Memorial Act 1962 as a national memorial of Australians who have died:

(i) on or as a result of active service; or

(ii) as a result of any war or warlike operations in which Australians have been on active service;

(b) to develop and maintain, as an integral part of the national memorial referred to in paragraph (a), a national collection of historical material;

(c) to exhibit, or to make available for exhibition by others, historical material from the memorial collection or historical material that is otherwise in the possession of the Memorial;

Yes, its a War Memorial, (not a Military Aircraft Museum) which as "part of its role" in commemorating those who have died serving their country in Active Service or the result of any War or War like operations develops and maintains a national collection of historical material.("including" Military aircraft relevent to its role and purpose).

While a number of RAAF crews have been lost in training missions in F-111's, I am unware of any RAAF crew losses in active service or war?

I am unaware of any use of the RAAF F-111's in active service or war?

I'm happy to be corrected? but I dont think the F-111 is relevent to the role and purpose of the AWM.

"

active service" , in relation to a member of the Defence Force, means:
(a) service by the member in connection with operations against the enemy;

Hence I dont see a role for, or a need for, an F-111 in the collection of the AWM?

A complete 2 squadron Canberra, rather than a nose cone, would be far more relevent, or an FA-18 from the Gulf War, they already have a Caribou and an Iroquois from Vietnam, and obviously the WW2 aircraft and WW1 aircraft.

Their display space is finite (as is their storage space) and therefore limits their ability to acquire "nice to haves" ahead of "need to haves", and "must haves".

VC medals ARE far more relevent to their role and purpose than a large peacetime service aircraft, even an iconic one.

The funding of VC's by Kerry Stokes saves the tax payer from the expenditure, ensures they are on public display, and leaves the AWM with funding for other purposes, even an F-111 if they "did" want one.

There are museums other than the AWM, such as QAM, who would be interested in taking one, as an alternative to scrapping them, and would be a relevent and suitable location for one to be preserved.
