Inactive units....how sad it is.

While looking up A-31/A-35 info I ended up checking out some of the inactive AF units on wiki. It's kinda interesting to see when the unit was disbanded. Or check out what aircraft types were used. I find it depressing how some units have been inactive for years. Still glinting a little in time. Or stuck in time.

Like this one: 513th Fighter Squadron. inactivated on 8 January 1961. Which was originally the 629th Bombardment Squadron (Dive).

Just wanted to say looking over some of the inactive units really gave me a chill and odd feelings. So much has been lost in history. How can one learn all of them?

(Im not an expert on squadron's etc. Too many, some renamed, remissioned, etc. )

Put Aerospace Defence Command into your GOOGLE and see what pops out the other side, ADC is probably the most under appreciated and least reported on outfit in the post war Air Force, back when every town (so it seemed) had it's own USAF Base with and ADC outfit.
And now, the entire West Coast is under the protection of the ANG folks @ KPDX from the California border to S.E. Alaska.

I always heard that when a unit inactivated that all the photos, plaques, and doo-dads from around the squadron building went into storage ~somewhere~ and were brought back out of storage when the unit was re-activated. Wonder if that's true and, if so, how many of those treasures sit in a warehouse down the aisle from the Lost Ark?

Once when I was taking the "behind the scenes" tour of the NMUSAF restoration/storage facilities, the guide showed us a large area of cabinets. She said they were climate-controlled units where all the official flags and such of all the USAF units were stored, including those that had been inactivated or disbanded.

I didn't see the Lost Ark..I assume it was off somewhere being studied by "top men."
