I am sure most here knows the story of the B-17F "Ye Olde Pub". I just wanted to express how heartfelt this story was.

God bless Mr. Franz Stigler. Ace pilot of JG 27 and hero to the crew of "Ye Olde Pub". :( Gone west in 2008 at age 93.

Hey Nathan,

This story has been kicking around here quite a bit. Some say that it is falsified, but the majority believe it to be true.

I'm proud to say that I got a chance to meet Franz twice before his passing. It is indeed a great story of humanity.

Peace,

David M

P.S. I was about to post this and I notice Jack chimed in.... lol... See what I mean. No disrespect to Jack. I like to believe it to be true, but nobody does for sure other than Charlie Brown (and his crew) and Franz Stigler.

I like this quote from the TOCH forum.
I knew Franz faily well and stayed with Him and hiya a couple of times in Surrey.
Also got a couple rides in his ME-108. With that being said I'm not a believer of this yarn.

This incident has come up before. The Luftwaffe pilot was Oberleutnant Franz Stigler of JG 27, a family friend since he flew with my uncle in Africa in 1942. I have had dinner with Franz and Charlie Brown in the past, and there is controversy in certain circles as to the veracity of this whole story. Keep in mind that Stigler was a member of the schwarm which included Erwin Sawallisch and which was accused of faking claims in Africa. I believe this led to the unexplained death of Sawallisch. Also, considering that shooting down viermots at this stage of the war was considered a duty and honor in light of the death toll of German civilians, it doesn't seem likely that a Jagdwaffe pilot would willingly let his victim go, especially since consequences for doing so could be negative. I'm not saying that chivalrous acts did not occur, but the participants in this alleged incident have gotten alot of "mileage" out of it.

I buy it. Seeing the wounded guys helping each other and thinking that shooting them down would be no different than shooting someone in a parachute closes the deal for me.

It's not a question of would someone show mercy but rather did this incident actually occur
and if it did are the participants correctly indentified

Jack, your post sounds like there is more to this than I'm aware of. Where can I learn more?
