Maybe this has been posted before and i'm sorry if i'm just re-threading this. My question is, can WIX buy a ww2 plane? I'm seeing a-26's, t-6's, b-25's for sale or rotting away. If WIX was able to collect donations through paypal to raise enough money and buy one, wouldn't that be incredible?! Think of the resources that the plane would have all across america. We have so many wonderful members here that are pilots, mechanics, veterans, re-enactors etc. An all volunteer crew across america at friendly airshows would ensure the plane would be flown and taken care of by WIX members. It would be like all of us would own just a little piece of history. Thoughts? :D

I wouldn't want to be Scott if WIX owned an airplane! The legal sh*t alone would be huge.

It's been discussed numerous times. I think the legal issues are huge, as is the problem of some WIXers feeling entitled to fly "their" plane, and then of course the whole deal about who would fly it, where it would be based, etc...
Some WIXers might want there to be no reenactors nearby, too. I think it wouldn't hurt to do one time sponsorships or something along those lines, but then just what do you get in return for the investment?

Quite a lot of WIX operates in a wider world than any one country.

And then there's the 95% who talk leaving it to the 5% who graft and pay...

There are plenty of organisations that already work open to the participation you are suggesting - like the CAF, Hot Stuff, the Corsair project, the B-17 tail, or the many other volunteer groups already on WIX.

Just some thoughts,

In a way WIX already owns many warbirds. By that I mean that many of WIX's members like Stockton Field Aviation Museum, or the several CAF wings regularly posting their restoration projects are already organizations that own and operate warbirds. The opportunity is already there for you to contribute to the preservation of history and to be proud that you are helping keep 'em flying.

As JDK mentioned here are dozens of groups that are currently operating today that you can donate $ towards the restoration, preservation, or operation of historic aircraft. Quite honestly, I don't think there would be a net gain in $ being spent or donated towards the preservation of aircraft if WIX owned one. If that was the case the organizations like the CAF that post on WIX would be inundated by donations from WIX members.

WIX's primary purpose is a online, global meeting place for wardbird enthusiasts. A job it does pretty well. Many WIX members are already members of these organizations and are already contributing. Let's let WIX do what it does best.

My father was a "partner" with a neighbor in the purchase of some farm equipment. When we needed the co-owned machinery it was always at the other guy's place, usually broken in some way, or he was "getting ready to go to the field" with it.

A Taylorcraft L-2 would be cheaper.

At a $1.59 I think we could all kick in and buy this one.
Of course the first SOB that gets it stuck in a tree of on the roof is paying the full $1.59!

I'll only support Drew's plan if the plane gets invasion stripes and a full ground crew of reenactors.

How about everyone go out and spend a $1.59 on their own glider, decorate it and have a few Wix sanctioned flyoffs during the airshow season, like at Oshkosh? Best Looking & Fly The Furthest. Submit photos and event reports on a thread... could be fun. There could be an entry fee that could be donated to a worthy restoration ...

Hell then next year we can do it again and call it a reenactment :finga:
