Phillips 66 questions

Sat Feb 19, 2011 12:42 am

Hi all,

I am tasked with taking some photos for my local airport. I plan to make another photo display for the airport office(this is all my idea but the airport must appreciate it enough to ask for some more posters full of airport photos). I am currently working out a night flight so I can get some air shots of the airport runway lights and taxi-way lights on. Tonight I attempted to night photograph the Phillips 66 sign erected next to the avgas tank which is cover by a small metal shed. I was curious what the significance of having the PHillips 66 sign there? It's a small airport but has been slowing getting improvements. With our town being the center of current gas drillers the airport has become busy...even at night! Anyhoo, I was just really curious about the sign. The airport is located just outside of town in a valley full of corn fields. One section of taxi-way has been finished so no more back taxiing to the north end of the runway to the main hanger. Future plans is to extend the runway from 4300 to 5000 and building another T-Hanger.

Phillips 66 is simply the fuel supplier to N27, Nathan. That's why it is also displayed on the airport website.

hi Scott!

I kinda knew that but was just curious what the idea of having the sign there. Thanks for the info! :D

I'm just kind of curious do some pilots prefer to know what brand of fuel they are getting? The airport road doesn't get much traffic its just a deadend lane to the airport and it runs by the fuel farm. If it's for advertisement or sponsoring the fuel I really don't see it as getting a lot of eyes. I think its cool they have it, kinda makes our little airport look more "official". :)

The sign might be a minimum advertising requirement of the franchise. One airport I worked at had a Phillips 66 sign between the pumps on the ramp, where it's sole purpose seemed to be the potential gathering of wingtips and lightning bolts

The FBO I used to work at has a AirBP sign out front. Can't remember what the other FBO on the field has for fuel.

Nathan, as for as pilots preferring a brand of fuel, I would say probably not. First of all many airports may have only one brand on site, at one FBO. The plane is going to run the same no matter what the brand,it all has to meet the same avgas specs. if you are shopping and are buying a large amount of fuel, like bomber fill up, the pilot may shop by price. If not price, convenience may be the factor. Which FBO is on the part of the field that you prefer, maybe next to the restaurant, or which FBO has the best and most friendly service like a cute lady at the counter or a line guy who doesn't mind cleaning the windscreen or they have a courtesy car to loan, or in some few cases a shop that you need work at.
Some pilots might have a credit card for one brand, like I used to have Phillips, but nowadays a lot of major Visa or MC, etc. credit cards give some type of milage or rebate award so I use them, to pay for most everything.

I just got a Christmas gift of a mostly free trip to Hawaii trip from these points.

I have found that often, not always, the FBO with the highest prices may have the best service, if their nose is not too far in the air from sniffing jet exhaust. At Santa Fe recently , they were very nice and helpful, gave us directions, loaned a courtesy car, great little pilot's room with the excellent WSI weather service. The other side of it was that avgas was $6.22 a gallon.

Is there any other airport details interesting to know? :D I love hanging out at the airport. Even when there is nothing going on or no one there. Am I a geek or what? :?
