I went there last fall with my son, old friend of mine and his daughter. We spent two FULL days there and wished we had planned on a third.
If you have any interest in it at all, be sure to go on the experimental & presidential hangar tour. The presidential planes aren't as sexy as the fighters and bombers in the main areas, but you get to walk through them. Think about it; you're literally walking where history has been made in those planes. Standing in the same spot where LBJ was sworn in gave me chills up my spine!

There's a lot of historically significant aircraft in the main buildings, too. Bockscar, for example.
It would be nice if the museum had a map or pamphlet highlighting these 'specials'.

Thanks to everybody who have commented on my original question here. I will definately go there at some stage.

I think that it would be worth it for you to stop in for a full day. While you won't see everything, you will see where things are so that when you come back, you will be more aware of things. I say when you come back because without a doubt after being there for a day, you will be coming back. It will change your mind on static museums. Let me know when you are going down. Weekday or weekend?

I don't know which day yet, or even if I'll have the time to stop by. It all depends on the interviews I plan to conduct while in the US. They take priority here. I will let you know as it gets closer to May though.
