Forest Lake Fly In Vintage Photos(Lots of them)

This past Saturday(Aug 20) the anual flyin was held at the Forest Lake Airport(25D). There weren't as many vintage aircraft as last year, but still a respectible turn out, with the Highlights being the Stinson SR-6A and the Travel Air E-4000. After many years of watching him fly, I finally decided to go on one of the rides Clay Adams offers. I'm very sorry I waited this long, flying in an open cockpit biplane from a grass strip is an absolutely incredible experience. A few warbirds did show up too, I'll try and get some of those shots posted tomorrow.

Nice pics! Guess I need to polish on my 170 alittle more to get my shine up like that one!

Bet that Travel Air ride was fun! I gotta get me a open cockpit biplane at somepoint!

Thanks Dan. The ride was amazing and the smile has yet to fade from my face. It helps that Clay Adams is an amazing pilot, I have seen him make perfect landings in the Travel Air in crosswinds that gave much heavier aircraft trouble. There wasn't as much vintage action as last year, when we had a bunch of vintage Cessnas, a Waco, and 2 Howard DGA's. A DGA passed over the field at about 1500' twice this year but didn't stop in.

Nice photo's. I always like seeing a nicely polished 170; NMF finishes seem to suit the lines of the 170--wouldn't look the same on a 180/185 or even a 190/195. Only thing prettier in my mind is a polished NMF Ryan ST-A. Not sure what that white aircraft is (Luscombe? Taylorcraft? Porterfield?). Also liked seeing the Stinson. There's an SR-9E up for sale in Australia and this site, http://www.rangemedia.com.au/stinsonsr9e , has some nice video of it.

Your right about flying from grass strips. I took a hop in a Stearman some years ago from a grass strip; no nicer way to spend a perfect October afternoon!

Thanks Neil, I've been getting lazy about captions lately. The white aircraft is a Luscombe 8A.

Ok I can be incredibly dense sometimes... The aircraft Neil was refering to is a Luscombe 8B, the white and red aircraft is a Stinson SR-6.

The polished 170s look great, but I wouldn't want to have to maintain that finish!

Great picture! I had seen other pictures of that one before but didnt realize it was a '52 model.... with a '56 paint scheme.

The one at the top of this thread looks to be a '53 and is painted like a '53

Oh yes... alot of work... look good... but alot of work! I am slowly painting the undersides of the airplane... that is the hard part to keep up!! Top sides are actually not that hard to keep up.

Great shots Dan! I ;ove them! The Luscombe 8A is painted up like Benny Howards air racer Mr. Mulligan. Looks pretty racy! And you are so right about a bi-plane on grass.....doesn't get much better than that!
