We've also requested all of the "Retro" aircraft to attend. The list stands at approximately 29, a number that can vary

Stoof driver wrote:Stoof Driver

Several years ago Donald Rumsfeld had the honor of flying with me and my crew around some arab parts of the world. I was in my seat reading a book about the Battle of Midway and he walked up and asked if it was a good book. I said yes it was and then I asked him "I understand you used to fly the Stoof in the Navy, is that true?" He looked at me kind of weird and said, "You don't look old enough to know what a Stoof is!". I told him I'd worked on a couple that were warbirds. He sat down beside me and for the next little while he talked about flying in the Navy, just like a regular guy. I refered to the T-6 and he said "Sarge, it's an SNJ!" One of his men walked up to us, looked at him and said "Excuse me Mr. Secretary, you have a phone call." He stood up, shook my hand, straightened his tie and said "well, its been fun but I have to get back to the people's business." It was a neat conversation.

The plane line-up via the Centennial of Naval Aviation Kick Off San Diego Facebook page:

The below information is subject to change, but as of 23 January:

First, airplanes won't be the only thing flying. The US Navy Leap Frogs will also be flying through the air and are scheduled for three separate jumps.

We expect 73 total static displays ranging from the Navy's first aircraft, The Curtis Triad, to our newest unmanned aerial vehicle. That total is made up of 44 current inventory aircraft (16 with heritage paint schemes) from the Coast Guard, Marines and Navy, and 29 historic Navy warbirds including the F4U Corsair, PB4Y-2 Privateer, SNJ Texan, SNB Kansan, PV-2 Harpoon, TA-4J, JN-4H Jenny, SNJ Texan, OV-10 Bronco, A-1 Triad, UH-1B Huey, HU-16 Albatross, A-1 Skyraider, T-28 Trojan, T-34B Mentor, TBM Avenger, SNJ Texan, TD2C-1 Culver, N2S Stearman, N3N Canary, and T-34B Mentor. There should also be Marine aircraft on the USS Peleliu and an SH-60R on the USS Pinckney.

The Parade of Flight will be composed of 190 aircraft the span the century of Naval Aviation. There will be more than 160 current inventory aircraft from the Coast Guard, Marines and Navy. The finale will be a 30 plus plane formation fly-by from Carrier Air Wing 9 of the John C. Stennis Carrier Strike Group. The Blue Angels will lead the Parade of flight and will be followed by almost 30 historic Navy warbirds including the STM Ryan, N3N Canary, N2S Stearman, SNJ Texan, SNB Kansan, FM-2 Wildcat, F6F Hellcat, F8F Bearcat, F4U Corsair, TBM Avenger, SBD Dauntless, PV-2 Harpoon, SB2C Helldiver, HU-16 Albatross, Four T-28 Trojans, Four T-34B Mentors, A-1 Skyraider, FJ-4 Fury, T-2 Buckeye, and T-33B Shooting Star.

 8) :supz: :supz: :supz: :supz: :supz: :supz: :supz: :supz:

There's a PB4Y in Arizona, still in H&P colors (with a yellow/orange flash down the fuselage and across the fin) which is now airworthy. They were hoping to have it at Oshkosh and Reno last year, but it wasn't ready in time.

With the undoubted variations in the formation skills of the pilots involved, I'm sure that would be an 'interesting' proposition.

There's no way in the world that all 150 planes will be in one formation. They will come in waves in groups of smaller numbers. All the money in the world can't pay for the insurance and liability associated with 150 planes being together in one massive formation, while mixing current Navy aircraft with civilian ones. It just won't happen.

It will probably be a "balbo" of sorts, similar to what they have at Legends and Chino each year.

I think the days of seeing a formation like this are looooooong over:

VX-31 is thrashing hard to get their bird done in time....they didn't have a big fancy paint facility to use  It looks like the old Grey & white scheme from the '80s with orange flashes on the wings, nose and tails. No official pics yet and I can't sneak any....I'd like to keep my job LOL!

Don't know how the Parade of Flight will "span the century" without a 1911 Curtiss (the Triad will be static only)

It's still sitting in a hangar at NAS Norfolk partially disassembled waiting for its ride to San Diego, they better figure it out quickly....
