Here is what I do. Make a copy of the dial as a reference, Make a reference point on the dial with a scribe ( ie; North on a compass card) then use stripper on the dial and needles. send it all into the instrument shop. I have done this for years and never had a problem, however since most instruments had been repainted, I haven't had to do this in several years.

all great advice!! unless i missed it in the thread , it should be mentioned that radium dials with cracking, brittle olive drab color is a sure sign that the radium is breaking down from age & is at it's most hazardous state as breathable. as oscardeuce stated, broken instruments should be handled with gloves. sometimes & for some reason deteriorating radium builds up outside the bezel & on the glass. be specially careful their!!
