Two Flying Tigers Movies in Development

One is said to be a Chinese-American IMAX production to be directed in the Spring of next year (2011) by Jon Woo -- the other is a long-gestating Tom Cruise vehicle from 20th Century Fox.

Aside from his cheesy grin...
He's a good example of actors not knowing when keep their opinions and private lives private.
IMHO, he comes across as a bit of a flake...even if he has a Mustang.

IMHO, he comes across as a bit of a flake...even if he has a Mustang.

That may be true, but IMO that is not reason enough to boycott his movies. I'm not particularly happy about what he says either, but he does support the warbird movement and it will gain increased focus and attention on the AVG and our Veterans. That, to me, is a good thing. If we were to avoid movies that had some connection to viewpoints that were not popular to most warbird enthusiasts, then we would probably never see another Hollywood movie. I just keep my boycotting to the most extreme examples of Hollywood that I don't like - Cruise is not one of them for me.

I just semi-hijacked the thread by offering my 2 cents worth.
I'm not a huge fan, but I'd probably pay money to see him in a goodairplane film.

But since good airplane films are very rare...I'm guessing my money is safe.

However, I did pay to see Fly Boys on the big screen just to reward the producers for trying.

BTW: The last good/great airplane film I saw, even with its occasional artistic excesses, was "The Right Stuff".

As far as watching movies with stars whose politics I dislike:

I don't care so long as their acting job entertains me. As for Cruise: he can act. And even if I don't like his politics I'll never forget what he said on the "Actor's Studio" when asked what was his favorite sound [I paraphrase]:

"The sound of a running Rolls Royce Merlin Mustang"


I just hope the Cruise Tigers movie is done well. PH, Flyboys.....sad...even Top Gun makes me wince.

Yes, I realize that 330thbg said that. It's just kind of hard to respond to something that has multiple quotes in it. BTW, have you not seen "Dark Blue World"? That was an EXCELLENT movie and came out nearly two decades after "The Right Stuff". You should see it, if you haven't!

You're right. Unless the makeup department does wonders with his face, Cruise is too much of a "pretty boy" to play the hard-core grizzled Chennault. I think somebody along the lines of Lee Ermey would do great!

I am a bit more interested in what airplanes will be used. It would be nice if the flying P-40B/C planes were used, and not the more numerous "N" models. In "Pearl Harbor" the first Spitfire they were going to use for the Battle of Britain part was a low back MKXIV, would not pass for a MKI even if you close one eye and put your finger in your ear.
In "Pearl Harbor" the most unlikely shot had to be the guy getting out of the C-47 and his buddies coffin coming out right behind him.
I've talked to people that did flying for both "Pearl Harbor" and "Valkyrie" it sounds like they had fun doing it and were paid for their time.
Years ago, I heard through the EAA magazine that Connie Edwards had several Spanish 109s in lieu of pay for his flying in "Battle of Britain"
maybe things are better now flying for movies.
"The Right Stuff" one of my local friends was an F-104 instructor pilot. He had flown both of the Luke AFB F-104Gs used in "The Right Stuff" some time prior to their use in the movie.
