OK, vibrator advice, anyone? No, no, stop sniggering........

We've been going through some of the spare bits we have kicking around the hangar and have come across a few of the following:

"Vibrator, Aircraft Engine Starting. AN4181-1, Type VJS 24A1, 27 Volt 1,7 Amps. American Bosch"

Anyone have any idea what aircraft this would have fitted? Would be nice to see them go back on an aeroplane.

the AN in the part number means it is a standard part,so it could have been on many different planes.

Thanks Matt, would be nice to identify the application of this part as it would be great to see them go back on an aeroplane and be of use to someone.

Got one on the Bell 47, supposed to help start it. Doesn't seem to make a lot of difference...

Ours are VJR24-B5 Vibrator, Induction.

Why would a BT-13 have several? We only have one per engine, connected to the left mag on each on the C-54.

The FG-1D Corsair uses the VJR24-B5X

Wasn't the BT-13 called the Vultee Vibrator?


The canopy provided the nickname “Vibrator.” When the cadet throttled back on descent and at certain rpms the canopy would come alive and would shake, rattle and roar in its tracks, very loud, very distracting:Thus, the Vultee Vibrator.

i need 3 of these vibrators to install on a 4360 i am trying to get running. i collect round motors and build cutaway displays for museums. you can see some of my engines which have been donated to california aerospace museum on the AEHS website.
