Anyone know when the airframe last had air under the wings?

It looks awesome even (especially?) without invasion stripes or a shark mouth!

I have a copy of a FAA 337 from a P-51D with a -724 from down in FL which is Limited.
The Lauderback's had done that install. We had thought about installing one in BE and were looking to use that paperwork to assist us.
Jim flew behind a 724 in the UK when the Horsemen performed there last year.
And We all know P-51s aren't exactly Standard Category but most are Limited Category otherwise they are registered in the Experimental Category.

my bad there. Limited.
I believe the one you're talking about the x-Moose/Candyman. Their were 1-2 from the
the good ol' boy daze that had 337 done and the local FAA buds signed them off. EVG's
is one but those days are far over. The boys now have the STC for the -724 install. 8)
This was a huge undertaking TG Bob's a vintage DER and very smart dude!

I believe you are referring to what is commonly known as a V1650-724 which is a hybrid. It's a Rolls crankcase with a Packard Wheelcase, Supercharger, Aftercooler, and Packard style intake manifolds on it, and uses the Bendix pressure inlection carburetor that is standard on the Mustang.

An actual Merlin 724, (Canadair Northstar engine) which is what is installed in J C Pauls Mustang is a whole different animal and is fuel injected. I believe there are only three or four of them in Mustangs.

Spot on Glenn! EVG's 51 is another one installed in the 70's at Unlimited Aircraft.
I was told it's a workout to fly them in formation.
