When the Navy originally acquired their 20 of the type, they left the factory in white and orange paint. As years went by (1960 - 1982) they no longer had a standard paint scheme. According to one source I spoke with at the Naval Aviation Museum, it seems each Station painted them according to their own taste. They sent me several photocopied pictures when I was trying to decide on the paint. I went with the paint and markings of the one at Pima, as I was able to have someone who was going through there take some detailed photos for reference points.

The only difference is I haven't put the four large black tail numbers on mine yet. I've been trying to decide if I should put the numbers, or some squadron tail markings, or both.

Anyone have a suggestion?

Kevin Kearney, I would like to second your offer to Kevin Walsh and to Michael Luther. The Navy R5D/C-54 Skymaster was an integral part of Naval Air Transport from the 1940s the until the U.S. Navy Test Pilot School retired the last one from service in 1974. What an appropriate airplane for the Centennial of Naval Aviation.

And of course Navy R5D's assigned to MATS supported the Berlin Airlift:

The BAHF R5D/C-54 would be a great vintage aircraft at TOM in 2011 and would look great next to a vintage R4D. I hope to see you and the Skymaster back in Michigan next July.

Two great additions to the lineup! Will be nice to see "Hot Stuff" up in Michigan again. Last time I saw her up here was at Muskegon 4-5 years ago. It will be cool to see a single-seater Skyhawk in the air as well. When I first started going to airshows I remember rows and rows of two-seaters in the trainer orange and white scheme, but I don't ever remember seeing a single-seater. One of my all-time favorite jets.
