Welcome aboard, Brian! I can only imagine how thrilling it is for you to see the actual aircraft your father flew in combat. I, too, would love to see your father's photos and hear more of his stories when you have the chance to share them with us!

For close to 20 yrs I've been under the impression that it was you and your dad who were the guys that came by and looked over the operation at Pioneer Aero Service. Which is why I had hoped you would have seen the fuselage sitting in the middle of the hangar, and noted it was the original one from your "Bald Eagle". Makes sense that no further comment was made then.

I think I might have a photo of the pair who came by lying in a box somewhere. Will try to find and scan it. I'll post it here and I trust someone might tell me which 51 owner it was.

I've been at Chino a lot and (as many of us have) I think I've been at Pioneer when I brought the SNJ back after the 1995 Pearl Harbor Carl Vinson launch, but never saw that fuselage or at least didn't appreciate what it was if I did at some point see it. If I had I would have asked about it and then maybe gone over to ask Bruce G wtf :?:

Greeting all, and thanks for the many welcomes.
After much discussion with my scanner, and establishing a photobucket account, here is my first attempt at posing a picture.

This is my Dad on the wing of his P51 (the future Fragile But Agile) which I always thought was a D model?

One post talked about his kills being both in the P-47. My Brother and I are not sure- we will research more. I do recall that one was a Betty bomber, and I believe the other was a Zeke 52.
I do know that allot of his missions in the P51 were ground support, in what was then Indo China.

Please let me know if the link works, and I will post more. Most of the photos of intrest are at our other ranch, a 3 our drive for me, I will see if I can get my brother to upload some......

and if anyone has any info where Fragile but Agile might be viewed, please let me know. I had heard it might be at the Salinas, CA airshow.

Link worked fine for me, thanks. Did your father eventually paint the friendly kill flag on the aircraft for the bomber shoot down incident? The Pima Museum recently rolled out their newly built example in the colours of 'Kit' Curdes who shot down a DC-3 mistakenly approaching a Japanese held airfield ( got the DFC for his troubles). IIRC a P-38 had an Aussie flag painted on it, having mistakenly shot down a Boomerang :shock:

As far as I know, no Flag for the bomber kill.
Another interesting tidbit, he had planned to name the plane for my mother, Louella. "Louella's Black Magic".
Think he was rotated home before it could be done.
Also, he was in the Pacific when C. Lindberg was touring the area. Lindberg gave (I assume ) the squadron a talk on extending range by constant airspeed, decreasing rpm/mp as weight decreased.
I know they did alot of long range missions, and fuel was a huge concerne.
