B-17 Constructor or Bureau Numbers listings?

Sun Sep 19, 2010 7:08 pm

Does anyone know if there is a site or source that lists all B-17 Bureau Numbers?
Or are they Construction Numbers? Are those two different things? I should know this stuff by now.

Thanks a lot! :)

I like to reference Joe Baugher's website as a start for all things related to Ser No. and BuNo.

The construction number c/n (also known as manufacturers' serial msn) is assigned by the maker and is the only permanent identity, regardless of the serial/tail number/registration carried during the airplane's life.

A lot of folks, including the FAA, don't seem to know the difference and many warbirds are registered with their US serial instead of the msn.

Air Corps/Air Force are given serials, Navy/Marines/USCG are the ones with bureau numbers.
As mentioned, Joe Baugher's lists are the most comprehensive.

There is also a complete list of Boeing construction numbers here: http://www.abcdlist.nl/mainb.html (the B-17s start at c/n 1963).
