Hey Greg,

Paula beat me to it, answering your questions. Looks like we'll be at Whiteman AFB for sure now (weekend of Sep 18), so that's good. We're stlll hoping for Scott AFB (weekend of Sep 11) as well.

Radio compartment-wise, we're in reasonably good shape. We haven't been able to locate the correct gooseneck lamp for the table, but we ought to be able to replicate it if we can't find it. There was a shop who swore they had a NOS one, but when they went back to the storeroom to find it, no joy. So it goes.

We are still looking for ARC-5 control boxes for the pilot's compartment. C-30 transmitter channel selector and C-26 receiver control. Also the C-2/ARR-2 control box, and the Bendix radio-compass control. We also have not located the navigator's manual caging switch for the flux gate compass, which is about the only remaining thing for the nav station.

We've made a backplate for the rocket intervalometer, and we'll be installing that, too., above the copilot's seat. Along with all those ARC-5 control boxes, Gaylon's going to have plenty of things to bang his head into over there on the right side.

We need to fabricate the ARC-5 rack, which is relatively simple, and as we don't have any ARC-5 mounting plates, we will have to make those, too, unless we can turn some up at a reasonable cost. We need a double receiver and single transmitter mount.

We are looking to find out if the P2V used the same kind of flare chute as the PV-2. If so, we may have a line on one of those.

The false floor for the nav station needs to be installed, and that will require fabrication of the floor supports. Dave Hansen has supplied us with some prints from his microfilm collection for the purpose. We have to make the navigator's table, too.

For now, we're leaving alone the right-side furnishings--no radar operator station, no liaison radio rack. Those will come in future efforts.

You can see that it's going to be a busy off-season, though! But we have high hopes that we'll be able to get 'er done.

Thanks Jenny! It does sound like a busy winter. Hopefully the Indiana winter will take it easy on us this year. I hate the cold, I don't know how you guys do it!

I may not be much help...maybe closer to no help at all...but I'll try and find some of the missing pieces. I've already found one of the boxes you listed and hope to hear something back about it in the morning and I'll get it on the way. On the Bendix radio-compass control and the navigator's manual caging switch for the flux gate compass, do you have any model numbers or part numbers?

Greg

Hello WIXers,

Just a quick one this time, until the regular MX report is ready ...

Big thanks going out to WIXer Greg from the Hot Stuff crew in general, and from yours truly in particular!

Because I arrived home this evening, and what is this box sitting on my porch? I don't have any shipments I'm waiting for ...

And what do you suppose is inside, but the command set transmitter control box I've been needing for ages now? (That's a C-30/ARC-5 pushbutton channel selector box for you WW2 radio geeks) And not only that, but also the flux gate compass remote gyro caging switch, the last item I needed for the navigator's rack! And the gunsight bulbs (one each for the MK-9 pilot's sight and the MK-18 turret gunner's predictor sight).

Greg, you are the man! As I have said before and continue to say.

We have big plans for the interior this winter, and these little boxes are all critical items towards giving us the right look and feel--the "right boxes in the right locations" scheme we're shooting for. I am just all excited.

This past weekend, we had a visit from the reunion of the 736th Field Artillery Battalion, veterans of the ETO during WW2. Former Sergeant Paul Merriman was our visiting vet, along with family members representing loved ones who have gone west.

Although not an aviation unit, they still enjoyed the sights and sounds of Hot Stuff, as we were doing engine runs. Those guys took their 8-inch howitzers all the way from Normandy clear across Europe, and saw action galore all the way. 15-ton guns, those were, up against everything Hitler could throw at them. It was good having them out.

I'm still waiting for photos, so there'll be more about this later. This coming weekend, we'll be at Whiteman Air Force Base, appearing in their airshow. Anyone in the vicinity of Knob Noster, MO (Kansas City area), come on out and see!

More shortly,

Hello again WIXers,

IndyJen here, reporting from the hotel room in Sedalia Missouri, which is where we have been put up by the fine folks of the 509th Bomb Wing U.S. Air Force, who are putting on the Whiteman Air Force Base air show this weekend.

In a while, we will head back down the road to the base, for the arrival-day evening airshow and competing parties put on by the fighter units at the base--the fighting 303rd FS, and their parent Wing, the 442nd FW. We're looking forward to seeing their A-10 demo, sure enough.

But in the meantime, I figured I'd let you know we were here, and tell the story of the trip so far.

It was a foggy start to the morning, coming on the heels of week after week of dry dry dry in Indiana. But we weren't unduly delayed.

Image

There's what there was to see of Mount Comfort Airport this morning. Socked in by a thin layer, it was, but as I say, it didn't take long to move along, burn off, and go away, and we launched only 20 minutes or so after our planned start time.

Image

Before we left, we got a quick crew picture with a recent donation--an oil painting by an artist whose name I neglected to record, drat it, and now we're 300 miles away from the signature I need to see. I'll amend this later on with the information. It's a very fine painting of a pair of Harpoons on patrol, and well done, too. When I ID the artist, I'll put up a pic of the painting such that you can get an idea of its fine depiction.

Image

After not too long of a delay, ground crew Scotty and Sideshow Ted got us launched, and we were off. Pictured above is the mighty Mississippi, which looks somewhat mightier than normal when viewed over the cowling of a PV-2.

Hot Stuff performed well, with no squawks and a nice smooth ride all the way. About two and a quarter hours to Whiteman from Mount Comfort, which is to say we weren't pushing her hard at all.

Image

There's a view of our flight crew at work: Captain Bubba in the left seat, Machine Shop Gaylon flying SIC, and President Rich in the Crew Chief's seat. For a change, I wasn't working, so I took these in-flight pics in between naps!

Image

The rest of the crew aboard consisted of Sandy, shown in the radar operator's seat, and PJ, who rode in her customary spot in the turret. You can maybe see her feet in the picture above.

PJ got some nice photos from in there, including that shot of the Mississippi above. She also got the following shot of the Whiteman ramp, which included a B-1:

Image

And a number of hangar shots, too, of the homes the B-2's live in. But also notable were the F-16's of the Thunderbirds, parked alongside as we taxied in:

Image

It's going to be a fine evening's show later today, featuring the Golden Knights and all the beer we can abscond with, and then a good couple days' airshow activities. If you are in the area (Central MO/Kansas City and the like), get on out here and come by the Harpoon!

More soon,

We'd love to be at that one, Seabee!

We're in talks with that show, actually, and I believe there's no show-stoppers in the way of getting a contract signed. We feel very enthusiastic about being at Thunder, and th organizers are interested in having us, so it looks good.

Next year is going to be a big year for the old Harpoon. The Centennial of Naval Aviation makes it a year when obscure Navy airplanes are wanted. We expect to have quite a few things going on apart from the airshows, too. But more on those things later.

It's Saturday, and we're stirring. Breakfast shortly, and then what promises to be a fine pleasant day out on the Whiteman ramp.

Would this be Hot Stuff's first visit to Thunder? I think the only time I ever saw her in Michigan was in Battle Creek some ten years ago.

I seem to recall "Hot Stuff" being at Thunder in 2002. It would be nice to see her there this year with all the other Navy birds.

I started with Hot Stuff in 2003, and she's never been to Thunder as long as I've been with her. She might have been there in 2002, but there's nobody in the group still active from those days, so it'll be a first for all of us.

I've been wanting to bring Hot Stuff to Michigan for years, so I'm really glad that there seems to be a strong possibility that we'll be there next year. It's a great show, and all it's really been lacking has been a Harpoon!

We have just finished a fine show this past weekend. Whiteman Air Force Base put on a great shindig, well attended, well run, and just generally a good experience. We'll be launching for home in a couple hours. Look for the usual trip report with pictures galore, coming soon ...

Hello again WIXers,

I've been catching up on some homework, and finishing the story of our trip to Whiteman AFB (Knob Noster, MO) keeps getting put on the back burner.

Suffice it to say that it was well done. The Air Force did their level best to' make everyone happy, and I'd be hard pressed to deny that they did exactly that--kudos to their fine airshow team!

(They kept apologizing, to the effect that "we are used to just taking airplanes and bombing people, and putting on shows is not our main thing, so we're really sorry if it's not what you're used to". But honestly, folks who put this sort of thing on professionally could learn a thing or two from them. Great job, Major Avery and team!)

So, being all backlogged and with yet more homework waiting to be attended to, let us get to the photo spread, shall we?

Image

There's Hot Stuff, on the ramp the morning of Show Day 1. She flew like a champ, with no squawks to speak of.

Image

Our nearest neighbor: a B-2 Stealth bomber. Nose to nose with this menacing-looking bird all weekend, we were, and it was a sight we didn't tire of.

Image

Nose to nose, all right!

Image

Other neighbors, farther down the ramp, included a Barksdale AFB B-52, an Elmendorf AK B-1, a KC-135, and a C-17. Some of our folks (including copilot Machine Shop Gaylon) got up in one cockpit or another--Gaylon sat in the C-17's seat, and got the full low-down from its pilot. Of course, Gaylon returned the favor when the C-17 boys came to visit.

Image

There's a view of the visiting and schmoozing, right there. Taking the plane to a military airbase gives one a higher-than-normal percentage of extremely knowledgeable folks. It was really great, talking with them.

Image

There's PJ with that B-52. I'm including this photo specifically for our man Electrical Guru Roy. Not only will Roy tell you that he is an old Coon-Ass from Louisiana, he also served a career as a B-52 electrician. I bet he probably worked on this very aircraft back in his day.

Image

The B-1 had some interesting nose art. A record-holder in various categories, and a combat veteran.

Image

One of the home-station fighter squadrons, the 403rd FS, threw a party for the performers on the Friday night before the airshow weekend. Stashed in their hangar were several highly interesting items, including this Waco CG-4, which is well on the way in its restoration. I believe the org who owns it is intending to fly it when it's done--or at least have it be capable of flight.

Image

As part of that Friday night show, the US Army Golden Knights parachute team did a night drop, to a small "X" on the apron in front of the party-hangar. Nearly all of them hit the spot bang on, too. Noteworthy: second from the middle on the right is Staff Sergeant Ryan Ray, who grew up a neighbor kid of our Gaylon's. It is just such a small world!

Image

Another view of Hot Stuff, with the airshow in full swing. That is one huge ramp! The crowd was estimated at 75,000, and I believe it, but people had plenty of elbow room in any case.

Image

We had a line out the door and along the wing pretty much all the time. It can be exhausting as you please, being on your feet all day spieling the spiel, but you know, I just don't get tired of telling people about our old bird. And these folks were extremely interested to hear about her, too, almost universally.

Image

There's a view of Captain Bubba, up on the wing checking the fuel levels. We fueled up Sunday morning, but he couldn't stand it--he had to know the consumption. We had a good economical flight, both fuel-wise and oil-wise.

Image

As always, our PX was run by Sandy Piercy, who invariably does a bang-up job. This could easily be a thankless job, but we are all so happy to have someone of her caliber that we thank her and thank her until she's sick of hearing about it. And yet she brings us cookies!

Image

We didn't fly during the show, having been hired as a static display, but the job of making R-2800 noise was ably filled by this CAF A-26. PJ and I went over and hobnobbed with them at their invitation, and it was pretty swell--I'd never been up in the cockpit of one of these, and as the movie "Always" is just about my favorite movie ever (live-action division), I was eating it up with a spoon.

Image

Another thing that was swell was getting a nice long visit on Sunday from our old friend Gary Hilton. He lives near enough, and got home from a road trip in time to come out and see us. There he is, hanging out at the PX table with Sandy and PJ. Good to see you, Gary!

So, WIXers, that's about all we have time for this time. Next up, I believe, is a trip down to Freeman Field (Seymour, IN), for their airport open house. That's on Oct 9. If you're in the neighborhood, drop in and see us!

Was great to see all of you in my neck of the woods....Whiteman is my birthplace, as my father was in Korea at the time, my folks families all lived nearby...I have yet to miss a Whiteman show for the last 10 years running, barely made this one in time...

Hot Stuff was looking good out there on the ramp...I was really expecting to see and hear Donna singing the theme song as I approached. My wife told me not to sing Hot Stuff anymore after the Peoria airshow...shoot, somebody's gotta do it...Hey, I got an idea! I know that PJ and IndyJen are very busy with the spectators, and Gaylon is busy checking out cockpits and all, so Glen....I can loan you my daughters Mr Microphone, and ya could do the song and dance routine on the wing...

Was an honor to meet Sandy and Rich as well....I tell you WIX'ers...a finer group of folks you'd be hard pressed to meet. For someone to put up with me hanging around so long, and all showing a phenominal amout of self control, as none of the crew actually came out and told me to go away....And for the "Rest of the Story"...in case you were wondering about the last photo IndyJen posted....sorry I didn't mean to break your camera...

Thanks for gracing the skies of Missouri, and bringing HS and crew to Whiteman....hope you can come out next year too..
We'll see ya afor long!

G.

Hi All-

Well, it's been rather quiet lately, but we have some good news today. We were able to move Hot Stuff from the Mount Comfort ramp to Greenwood and get her under cover just before the big ice storm started. The prep for the move involved the usual uncovering and inspecting, the installation of the battery, plus topping off the hydraulic fluid and nitrogen, and pre oiling and pulling the engines through. Both engines ran extremely well, all the systems performed just fine, and there were no issues with the somewhat shorter than usual runway down at Greenwood. All the gauges ran parallel, the engines sounded wonderful, and there wasn't a single hiccup. I am very pleased with how the old girl ran.

So, the next step: the D check. Going forward, we will be executing this year's D check in the Greenwood hangar, just as she sits now. Gaylon is managing this year's event, and he will be the point of contact going forward. We hope to keep an aggressive schedule as we can't be in the hangar for ever, and the US Navy is anxious to have us participate in their celebration of 100 years of Naval Aviation. The sooner we get'er done, the sooner we can knock out some training and start taking her to shows. So, come on out and get dirty! Although we expect this iteration to be one of the easiest yet due to all the work we've done recently, the process still involves many, many hours of work. Much of it is very simple disassembly, cleaning, and reassembly under the guidance of one of our managers. So, don't be a stranger; come on out and help keep out National Historic Landmark on schedule!
