if some of you aren't familiar with the ultra posh greenbrier resort hotel in west virginia it was built in the late 50's early 60's as a cover for secret bunkers that were built in case of all out nuclear attack on the u.s. the premise of the bunkers were that the government would be run from their with the president, & all bodies of government, senate, congress, & other top echelon officials in the protection of the blast proof facility. it was self sustaining with with it's own power source, hospital meeting chambers etc. a buddy of mine lives across the road from their & golfs their quite often for cheap because he has a friend who works their. when the bunkers were declassified it was open to the public for tours etc. however, my buddies friend stated that he still thinks some of the bunkers are still somewhat active & some still haven't been opened to the public. he swears that there is still classified activity going on their. interesting & scary to think about!! can anybody shed some light to this??

What's so scary about it? it is no secret that if the command / political structure of the country has to be evacuated from D.C. they will be taken to places like Greenbrier. It is to ensure continuation of government in the event of disaster. The government keeps it on the down low for obvious reasons.

When the threat was bombers over the pole or even land based ICBM's, the Greenbriar made good sense. There was enough time for VIP's to have a chance of escaping Washington. Sub launched missiles from right off-shore pretty much eliminated any margin for VIP's to escape a first strike. This obsoleted the Greenbriar.

When I was a kid, perhpaps 8 years old, my Dad took us to the Greenbriar on vacation.
It was a beautiful place in a scenic location. I never heard anything then about the bunkers.
I reacall it was so big that they had elevators that went not only up and down, but sideways along the floors. I have this in my mind, it might or might not be true.
I also recall, that right on the grounds or nearby was a grass runway or at least a meadow, and my dad treated me to the first airplane flight that I can remember. I am not sure, but it is possible that I had not even been on an airliner then,as we used to drive cross country.
I am pretty sure the plane was tandem fore and aft two seater like a Super Cub. It was only the pilot and I. It was kind of noisy, the sightseeing was great and I loved it.
I have never heard that the Greenbriar was built only as a cover. I think I have read and it seems more likely that the govt paid part or all of the development. It seemed to me to be a going resort and I think still is.
