A Midway movie would be a great chance to tell the story of Ensign Micheel, who was featured in the companion book to the miniseries. His story is fascinating. He only passed away a few weeks ago. Eerie to start reading the book and hear of his death while still reading about him.

Cheers,
Matt

Ironic you mention the B-26. That would actually be a good choice. Didn't they drop torpedoes, unsuccessfully, against the IJN?

I want to know which B-17s will get converted to look like "E" models and painted up in Hawaii Depot camouflage!

The Movie Memphis Belle seems like the most logical of choices. Next would be Boeing BEE.

And Kermit, warm up that B-26 and paint out the meatballs!

(I really start feeling old when I realize how many members of the starring cast of the '76 version are gone - Heston, Fonda, Ford, Coburn, Mitchum, Mifune, even Pat Morita. Biggest names left I guess would be Hal Holbrook, Robert Wagner, Tom Selleck and Cliff Robertson.)

There is a great print of a B-26 flying down the Akagi's deck to avoid flak.

It was from the 22 or 38th BG and named Susie-Q. It was flown by Jim Murci.

Re: New Midway Movie - Brad Pitt as Max Leslie?

Some of the Hollywood comments got me to thinking...who would play the roles today?

Jet Li as Genda or Fuchida?

With Tishiro Minufe gone I can't even think who would play Admiral Yamamoto. :x Ken Wanatabe (Last Samurai) might be pretty good...

Maybe Brad Pitt as Max Leslie...

And no, Jennifer Anniston would not play Halsey for you smart alecks out there in Wix Land.

When I first read this thread, there were no replies and I was going to say that I had a call into my agent Ari Gold...and we were going to take a meeting...but I thought my humor would have been misplaced, obviously you have more of a sense of humor that I gave you credit for. :D

My guess is they'll cast the entire cast of "True Blood"....anyway thay can fit vampires in the story?

And now with Toshirô Mifune and Pat Morita gone, and James Shigeta and George Takei both a bit old (the latter three were Hollywood's go to Japanese guys for years)...who will they get for Yamamoto?

My best cynical guess: Jon Gosselin...Anyone...anyone?
If he's too young fo the Admiral, strap him in a Tora surplus Kate or Val (I vote for a Kate) and make him the attack leader.
The director's instructions to him would be simple...."Jon, don't look at the camera.
Give me a determined, killer look. Pretend it's Kate on a raft...".

Re: New Midway Movie - John Gosselin as Kate bombadier?

Jboyle, your post made my sides split laughing so hard. I'm with you in that Ari Gold is the only person in the world that could cast this movie and he is a fictional character!

Id also vote for John Gosselin to take a flying role in a Kate, especially since one of our Dixie Wing members has one. Although he would need to be the mid-position bombadier as in the History Channel work we have done with the Kate that role is played by a plastic dummy!

I always enjoyed Midway. Despite the bad footage at times. Some of the script was well done. Including the PBY's searching for the Japanese, and the carrier air groups getting mixed up and losing each other. All true in one form or another. Also no other movie will show the grusome fate that happened to VT-8. A good soundtrack, and giving a feel for the desperation at the time. It shows that the Doolittle Raid, Coral Sea, and Midway were all linked together. If you can get pasted the wrong aircraft(which happenes in EVERY war movie) its not that bad. I get no more thrill then watching Tora, Tora, Tora then Midway.

Nathan(or oddball) :D 8)

Subject notwithstanding, I wouldn’t expect it for quite some time. I have been working peripherally with a production company on an ETO-themed movie that is currently in limbo. I was talking with one of their people lately and was told there is NO big financing going on for big-budget films at all right now. The money people aren’t investing large amounts into movies right now. The recent large budget stuff you’ve seen in films were all financed long before the “meltdown”. I was told by one of them to expect a lot of romantic comedies and “buddy cop” movies for the next few years because they’re reasonably cheap to make.

"Pearl Harbor" was a romantic comedy. Ben Affleck's character fell in love with that nurse and the movie kept me in stitches laughing at how horrible and unrealistic all of the CGI airplanes were.

So, maybe there's hope!

The History Channel's "History or Hollywood" show really tore up Pearl Harbor. When a Pearl-vet was asked if it was history or Hollywood, he said "Only Hollywood could make a naval battle all about the Air Corps."

I look forward to seeing a new movie about Midway. I would also like to see something on the Coral Sea or, better yet, a new rendition of the real VMF-214. With computer graphics, they could fill the skies with fighting Corsairs and Zeros!
