There's a photo of Robert Scott in which he is giving the "Okay" hand gesture, only it is inverted. Does anyone know why he did that and the meaning?
Thanks

Then you don't know Bob Scott. I worked with him for 5 years while he was the President of the Museum of Aviation Foundation. He was the epitome of a true Southern Gentleman. Also, this was a PR photo and they wouldn't let him do that back then... I think.
Probably just the Okay gesture below his kills.

This. Hold his hand up, and he blocks his tie (an interesting little tidbit showing how professional the American warrior is...nice little touch to make sure it showed), and from the angle of the sun, he'd throw a shadow right across his body as well.

You know, that aircraft doesn't appear to have uch in the way of forward visibility...

I guess I should have left my since of humor at the door....

Why would you guys ever think I meant anything untoward about Mr. Scott or would demean his reputation in anyway?

Besides...it's just a stupid looky-loo hand game that 5th graders play...

Gee Whiz...

Famous old photo and a great portrait of the man.

I don't know for certain, but ever since I first saw that photo I've always presumed that he was making a "meatball" sign to mimic the kill markings as a joke.

I thought the same thing. I've also have this die-cast replica of one of his planes.

Obviously he's giving the "double-G" sign for "gangsta gangsta"!

People need to lighten up around here. Zane, I didn't think your post was in poor taste. It's not like you insulted the memory of the man in any way!

There's a (I think apocryphal) story that the circled fingers was a Great War Royal Flying Corps signal for 'ours' based on roundels, while crossed fingers stood for 'theirs' (the German cross). Neat, unsubstantiated, and probably bull.
