Ollie's Classic Air Rallye 2010

Mon Aug 30, 2010 8:22 pm

I attended the 2010 edition of the Classic Air Rallye held at the Canada Aviation and Space Museum in Rockliffe, near Ottawa. This year marked a very special occasion, for it was the first time in a long time that two Lysanders were airborne together in Canada.

Also, Hawker Hind L7180 was pulled out of the museum to have her engine ran a few times. It started perfectly!

Also, every year, I take part in a small act with the local re-enactors...

A big thank you goes out to Flight Works for the hard work they put in the event, it clearly is the friendliest airshow in Eastern Canada.

WONDERFUL photos Ollie!

I note that the CWH Lizzie pilot seems to have forgotten to lock the tail wheel on that take-off shot... must have been a little hairy!

Cheers,
Richard

Great pictures! Looks like fun.

In the 3rd and 4th picture you've made the Lizzies look like very fast machines!!

Peace,

David

That's just slow shutter speed, with very careful panning... a good testament to Ollie's skill with a camera. They are pretty fast though! That's a big engine up front.... nearly 900hp!

Cheers,
Richard

Actually David, the Lysander is quite a fast aircraft, considering it can fly as slow as 65 mph and as fast as 212 mph. If you get to see her fly one day you will be suitably impressed.

Wow, 212mph is pretty fast. I was always under the impression that since it could fly so slow, that it couldn't go too fast.

I can't wait to see a Lysander fly in real life.

Youtube has shown me that the Lizzie looks great in the air. And looks like a really fun airplane to fly. Or maybe the pilot in the video was just having a lot of fun flying it, and it showed.

Peace,

David M

Thanks guys. I don't think the tail wheel is steerable in the Lysander. Those shots are of the aircraft landing, and the shot before the tail wheel was straight, just like the shot after where it is straight again.

Ollie you were pretty spry getting out of the FW despite the heat, always a lot of fun!
I was backing up the Tiger Moth so missed the Hind running, George Neal who is in his 90's did the honours.

Is that a mock-up of the F-35? Or is security really not that big of an issue in Ottawa?

I remember when the F-117 Stealth Fighter showed up for the first time ever at the Abbotsford Airshow. There were armed guards with semi-automatic rifles and multiple barriers. How come there doesn't appear to be any of that around what one might consider the most advanced jet fighter on the planet?

Peace,

David

That's part of the stealth feature Davey, the F-35 is so bloody Fugly even the hostiles don't care to look at it.

"Banana for your monkey, ma'am?"

Davey,
That's one of a few mockups that are floating around....

Thanks for confirming that Ztex, I figured that was the only possible explanation for such lax security.

Even thought it's just a mock-up I would still love to take a good look at it.

Peace,

David
