Did it sell the last time it was for sale? Would love to see it refitted as a wartime PBY. I love the Black Cat look.

Seems like that one has either changed hands a lot, or just been for sale a lot and not sold. It's a sharp-looking Cat. I would love to see someone restore it with the bow turret and the rear blisters though.

Was this the same PBY that was based in Ft. Lauderdale some years back? I recall seeing a PBY in that particular paint scheme in '97(I think!), although it could have been a bit more recent.

She looks like a good airplane. The interior appears to be very nicely restored.

The price tag is about right I'd say, for a Cat like that. It's a shame nobody has purchased her and began using it as the ultimate camper. I guess bubbles would make it more appealing.

Peace,

David M

If I bought a PBY to make it my personal cruiser, I think I'd want to start with a pretty beat up airframe so I could cut it up and modify it and no one would be too upset. The wings would have to be the same case. With this Black Cat PBY, it does have a lot of post war mods. (Clipper Bow, One piece Blisters, R-2600's, squared off tail, etc) But I don't think I'd modernize this one any further than what's been done to it.

That airplane used to belong to Charlie Clements, & was known as "Super Cat". Those R-2600's will drag a P-Boat around the sky pretty good. Looks like it is registered to a bank now. 8)

Anyone know why the tail was modified to that configuration?

Django - this Catalina has the large rudder in order to provide the increased authority required by the 1,700hp Wright Cyclones that have been fitted in place of the 1,200hp Twin Wasps. All the Cyclone-powered Cats had bigger rudders although some PBY-6As with Cyclones retained the taller rudder of this version rather than having the squared off unit as on N287, the subject of these postings.

As for N287 itself, I had understood that Charlie Clements had sold it to a new owner that/who was intending to use it in the Far East. Perhaps this has fallen through?

For what it's worth, a water bomber that was based at Deer Park, Washington for years lost its contract with the state two years ago.
At the time, its owner said he'd sell it to a warbird collecter...
Wonder where it is now?
