Regarding the Coffman starters I remember my first instructor in A&P school telling us that as 19 year old mechanics in WW2 when they couldn't get an FM 2 started they would get a cartridge for an F6F which had something like twice the powder and somehow cram that into the FM 2 starter. If you couldn't get it started with one of those there was something else wrong beside technique!
