RNZAF Boeing 757

RNZAF's Boeing 757 #NZ7571, it was here at AFW (Alliance Airport) for an engine change. It did it's post engine change test flight today. I think it's ironic to have a flightless bird as a national insignia on an airplane.

Can any "Kiwi" out there tell us what the airplane is used for?

They would kill you first then tell you, has it been fitted with APS winglets like most of the civil 57's?

Australia has a kangaroo, the Canadians a Maple Leaf, the South Africans used to have a Springbok (but now have a Sea Eagle). A little more indigenous in each case than the British dot or the US star.

The New Zealanders carried a silver fern for a while, like the All Blacks, their rugby team wear, but it was often 'mistaken' when visiting overseas for a white feather, much hilarity (not) ensuing...

It's an aeroplane to the owners as well. :wink:

The Kiwis put on a stunning demo I've seen a couple of times so far, in the UK and here at Avalon with their 757, pretty impressive and worth catching. At those displays the aircraft is described as a VIP transport. Don't forget, NZ is a long way from anywhere else.

Back in the late 80's when RYAN AIR (no not the 'charge you for air and light' outfit) was the initial operator of UPS' 757 24APF's. TRAMCO @ KPAE began doing 'C' checks on the them (still do as far as I know). They had one captain who we nicknamed 'Captain toothpick' because he perpetually had one in his mouth, he loved to show off the time to climb from rotation by doing zoom takeoffs to about 4000 ft. As he would nose over the sound of the outflow valve from cabin pressurization could be clearly heard over the muffled engine noise going 'WHOO-WHOO-WHOO' as it tried to compensate for the rapid buildup and release of cabin pressure caused by the steep pull and rapid level offs.
AHHHH....back when aviation was fun!

The RNZAF use their 2 757s in a multitude of roles since doing away with their Skyhawks and Macchis a number of years back. In the event of an attack on New Zealand, they will be fitted with door gunners and used as interceptors until the ammunition runs out - after that, the gunners will throw small rocks at the incoming aircraft. For offensive operations, they will throw empty beer bottles out of the doors in the hope that they will whistle like bombs on the way down and panic the enemy into surrender.

The 57 was a joy to work on! Engine & gear swaps are a breeze! I have many hrs. on UPS 57's and quite a few on TP-01.

Meanwhile Britain's RA_ (they had to lose the 'F', due to cutbacks) are studying the concept with the idea of applying it to Brtain's greatest airliner, the Brabazon. :wink:

It's OK if you certify your thrown rocks are organic and recyclable.
