Gunsight - identify for me please.

Tue Jul 20, 2010 4:56 pm

Not sure if this is the right place but I've got PARTS and other stuff.

I'm pretty sure I have this at home: http://www.warbirdsite.com/museumgunsights.html
Item 106.
I have the box too. The sight has a 110v 3-prong electrical cord attached. Why? I plugged it in and a light is inside. It's neat but is the cord an add-on to make it light up and a desk conversation piece?
What is the value?
What plane(s) did it come from?
Does the cord make it less valuable?

It's not something I'd keep around so I'd like to get a value of it before I decide to part with it. I have another similar sight as well but no carrying box. I apologize for no pics. I will get busy.

ellice_island_kid wrote:That is a very common gun sight. You can find them on Ebay all the time... If you are considering selling it rather than collecting it would fetch about $50.

$50 for a MkII with OVAL glass?? No offense, but you really have no idea what you're talking about here! The box alone is worth more than $50, and the early MKII's are not "common."

Thanks for the input so far. Here's more info I found stamped on it:
Stores ref No. 88/1124 2666
Reflector Sight MK II
AM Serial No 5428/41
British Patent No 504845/37

The case has 2 ID tags on it. One looks original the other looks like it came afterwards but it's still an old paper tag. Has a leather handle, brass clips, wooden case. The case is open and I didn't do a good job of showing the lid.
Is it from a Spitfire? From my mother's collection. She was into European WW2 air war items but collected a variety of other WW2 and 1940's era items as well.

I also have this one:
Us Army Air Forces
Gunsight
N-6A Type 24704A Spec No.
W11-107 ac-143(52) Order No.
E.A. Labratories Inc. Brooklyn, NY

What did this come from? Value?

I'd like to sell both of these. I'm keeping some framed fighter plane prints and models for my son's room but I have no intention of keeping artifacts like this. I think they need to be in the hands of a collector.

Hi your MK 2 reflector fitted spits and many other ww2 british a/c , it is a very nice example would be worth $600 to $800 or more on evilbay .

As for the N6 they are a turret sight , not really worth much $50 to $100 if you were lucky.

Thanks for the info. Is eBay the preferred place to sell items like this rather than here? I know the bay/paypal takes a good chunk of your sales. :(

I think I have a pilot mask too, if that's what you call it.

This is indeed a rare sight that could easily be worth 6 to 800 GBP but only IF THE SIGHTING HEAD AND GLASS ARE ORIGINAL as most MK II with oval glass to be found today are unfortunately reproductions (i do not say yours is !).

Ebay UK would be the best place for this sight.

I will inspect it more closely.
I've never sold on eBay outside of US. I'm not sure how that works. Advice? Tips?

Anyone ever watch "Pawn Stars"? I get the feeling if I walked in with these items, asked for.. let's say $500, that bald guy would go to the trouble of arranging a meeting with his military museum consultant, only to end up offering $100. Those pawn guys prey on the weak, desperate, and gamblers.

Hi Airmanual this mk2 sight is not an oval top one . note the square reflector glass these were used up to the end of ww2 along side the mk2 gyro sight.

One more barrage of newbie questions before I put these up for sale.

MK2
The angled glass is square and appears to be in very good shape. Holding the glass in tightly are some cork looking strips that are not cracked or dingy. Could all this possibly mean the glass has been replaced?
If so, does that lessen the value?
How much?

Thanks for your help guys.
