Hi Matt....we never know where we're going to an airshow until the last minute. For the most part, we seam to pick up slots where other planes have cancelled. Anyone wanting Hot Stuff at their airshow should feel fre to contact one of us and we will work to make it happen.

I am very happy to see Hot Stuff back where she belongs, gracing the Hoosier skies once again! Too bad about the wash-out Saturday....but glad to see her struttin' her stuff Sunday!

I was hoping to make it up there, but I have run amuck in a series of mis-adventures....Made it down to Texarkanna Thursday, to work on the impossible wing pins on the Lodestar, but as you know, the weather system in the central part of the states was soggy to say the least....I left there Friday afternoon, thinking I could take a shortcut due north to Russelville, but I hadn't been listening to any news, and found out the hard way about the tragedy that occured in the flooding in Ar. Had to back track to divert from the flood area, and fight thru the incoming traffic of rescue workers and news media folks (rude people)...Got as far as southern Ill and blew a hole in my radiator in the ole Freightshaker...Limped up to Effingham, where I am now waiting to get a replacement heat-exchanger. So it was of good cheer to hear that Hot Stuff is back up and on line!

Carvair....yep, I do use the compressor on my truck to run the air drills, rivet guns, and anything else I can put on the fittings at the end of the 100' of hose I carry....Trouble is at home, the wing is in the meadow at home, down hill from my house, and the ground has been too saturated (for last two years) to support the Freightliner....The generator would run the lights and boom box....work after the sun goes down!
I do need to invest in a gas powered compressor.

Cheers for now!!!

Great photos, Aaron!! It was great seeing and talking to you and hopefully we'll see you at another MidWest air show this season (or two or three).

Well, another Indianapolis Airshow has come and gone. It was a wild week. We started on Thursday with a Harpoon hop to Muncie, In. (KMIE). MachineShop Gaylon wanted to pay a visit to the avionics folks there and since they have a restaurant it was only natural that we go eat a $100 hamburger. Of course, when you fly in a Harpoon, the tab is a little over $100.

Here we see PIC Bubba and SIC Gaylon flying along on the way to Muncie:

Image

When we landed, folks came from all around the field and inside the restaurant. There's Scotty chatting to the folks. We had trouble ordering our food because the waitresses all ran out to see Hot Stuff:

Image

Finally, it was time to fly back to Mt. Comfort to get the PV-2 washed and ready for the Indy Airshow. Here you see Muncie Airport as we leave the pattern:

Image

One of the things we did after washing her was to reinstall the dust covers for the wheels, all expertly safety wired by Indy Jen in accordance with the PV-2 Erection and Maintenance Manual:

Image

Friday's Preview/Practice day found all of the warbirds sitting. No parade of warbirds this year. As noted, Saturday was cancelled due to the parking lot quagmire. Sunday the sun came out and there was flying to be had. While the Harpoon, B-25, B-17, and Mustangs orbitted waiting their bomb and photo runs, the T-28 and Skyraider ran-up in front of Hot Rod Steve and me. We found an empty tent along the taxiway and pulled the Willys in out of the hot sun.

Image

The Air Heritage ThunderPig taxied past. Looking good and sounding good with those mighty P & W R-2800's:

Image

Finally the bombers did their runs, and there was Hot Stuff, showing the crowd what she does best:

Image

When the bomber segment was over it was time for Hot Stuff and her crew of Steve (PIC), Scotty (SIC) and Indy Jen (Crew Chief) to taxi back and talk to the folks once more.

Image

Thanks again to all who stopped by to chat, take photos, or make a donation. Hoping to see many folks again at upcoming shows. A special thanks and hello to the ThunderPig and her crew and B-17 Yankee Lady and her crew. It was nice seeing and talking to you folks for the weekend.

Blue skies to all.

Nice pics, PJ!

I only had time to snap a few while we were out there this past weekend, mostly of plane prep goings-on, but let us add them in, shall we?

Image

There's PJ, cleaning the airplane for all she's worth. She and I went out Thursday afternoon for a plane wash, while Sideshow Ted and his wife took on the job of cleaning up the shop and office area. There's a whole lot of surface area on a PV-2, and for two people, it takes a while to scrub her down. My favorite part: the leading edges all needed particular attention, because they were crusty with bugs--the unmistakable sign that This Plane Has Returned to the Skies.

Image

And there's a shot of Hot Stuff and her admirers during the show Sunday. The crowds ebbed and flowed around the door during the weekend, but business was fairly continuous, and after we flew Sunday, the line extended down the ramp--but then, it always works like that. Once the people hear her and see her in action, they want to get inside and have a look.

In the foreground, btw, is PJ's beloved 1946 Willys Jeep, which she restored from the ground up some years ago. She drove it in early Friday, and the AMHF'ers used it as a crew vehicle, Eighth Air Force-style: whenever we had to be somewhere, we'd all pile in/on the jeep and cling to whatever was available, and roar off. Too bad I couldn't get a photo of that, but then, I was busy hanging on for dear life.

Here is one more of the old girl launching on sunday for the show, those engines turning provided some nice vapor around the props.

Great shot, Aaron! I'm glad Sunday turned out to be flyable. With all of the rain we've had lately, we almost need a Catalina!

Hello again, WIXers,

It seems that everywhere Hot Stuff goes these days, we run into WIX people, and each one of those WIX people invariably want to know 'what's up with IndyJen, and why isn't she writing the Hot Stuff reports any more?' And they look at you with their sad puppy-dog eyes, and there just ain't any good answers for them.

So: okay, okay already! Consider this post to be The Triumphant Return of IndyJen, then, and let the semi-regular Hot Stuff reports resume. And thanks to all you folks (Warren, WIXer Greg, Flyin' Illini, Gaylon's neighbor, Scotty's Dad, the guys from the EAA, et al) who have expressed dismay at not getting your regular Harpoon fix. It warms my heart, it does, to know that the old plane has fans and well-wishers out there.

So, let us get on with the photo-essay covering the recent doin's, shall we?

Image

Last weekend saw Hot Stuff at her second show of the month: the small but enjoyable little airshow at Kokomo, Indiana. Pictured above is the warbird lineup, or a good portion thereof, running up prior to launching. It was a hot day, which is the only kind of weather we've been having here for about the last month. But it was tolerable out there on the ramp, a very fine day for being out at the airport, looking at planes.

This show was a one-day affair, and not too far from home base, so it was an early start to the day for loading up and launching in time to get there for briefing. The crew was Long Tall Glen in the left seat, Machine Shop Gaylon as co-pilot, and Hot Rod Steve riding as crew chief.

Image

There are the boys, right there, on the way up to OKK. This was Glen's first flight as PIC to a show, and he did a fine job, of course. It was also Steve's first show hop in the third seat, and ditto. In fact, I'm thinking that the same applies to Gaylon, so all three of 'em had their first show experience on this trip, and it was a good one for the purpose. You would have thought they all had done this hundreds of times before.

Image

There's Cap'n Bubba himself, shortly after arrival. Glen's put in many arduous hours on this plane, so it was good to see him finally get a little payoff for all his effort.

Image

The rest of the crew making the trip: Sandy (Gaylon's wife, who runs our PX sales with good humor and great skill), Smilin' Nadine (Steve's wife, who I think was making her first hop in the Harpoon), PJ (feet just visible in the photo above; she's riding in her favorite seat, namely the turret), President Rich, Don who is frequently called Bob (and who is not in the pic above), and Electrical Guru Roy (who drove up).

Image

The first order of business upon landing was to give the plane a wipe-down and set up to receive visitors. We have repeatedly had the experience of landing and immediately being swarmed by the visitors, and it was that way on this day. Harpoons look tubby sitting on the ground, but in the air with the gear tucked up, they look and sound like All Business, and the people will come running. We hardly had a chance to start unloading the goods, and here they came.

Image

The Kokomo crowd were good folks--interested, polite, and good natured. Pleasant people to chat with, as a rule, and they were all about learning about PV's and seeing the plane.

Image

There's Sandy, setting up the store. We are already getting a line at the door, and the plane is still half-full of bins and boxes! Shortly after this photo was taken, who should show up but WIXer Greg, and he gave us a hand getting the goods out and arranged for display. Thanks Greg!

Image

Handling the door, there, is PJ. We normally station one person inside the plane, to keep an eye on things and answer questions. The person outside the door gives the people waiting their turn a little introduction to Harpoon lore, and likewise answers questions. Under the wing is where we put the PX. Other crewmembers circulate among the visitors, chatting with them. In general, this seems to work pretty well for giving visitors a good experience.

Image

The fly-by portion of the show was nice and relaxed, but still good to see. The planes did various passes, showing off their lines to the admirers below, and broke away at one point to overfly a parade that was going on downtown. This had the desired effect of drawing people from the parade to the show--we heard from a few latecomers at least that they came over to the airport after seeing the planes over the town.

Image

While the flying was going on, the ramp was secured, so the crew repaired to a grassy verge to relax and watch the goings-on.

Image

That's about it for the show report--like I said, it was a small, grassroots-type show. We made a little in PX sales, and came home with slightly more fuel in the tanks than we left with, and acquired some good crew experience, and in general considered it a good day.

For the homeward trip, PJ allowed herself to be talked out of her favored turret seat, and I got to ride in there, only the second time I've ever flown in that seat. It's a very interesting way to fly, all backwards. Until the tail comes up on takeoff, too, it feels a bit ... well, slanty in there.

Image

There's the view of Kokomo airport (OKK) as we flew away. A nice day for it, and a good way to start the Independence Day weekend.

And here are a few views one doesn't get to see every day:

Image

Shot over my shoulder, looking forward. You basically sit up on top of the plane when you're in the turret.

Image

Your correspondent--dirty and sweaty after a day's work, but having a great time. I kept the straw hat on for the ride, because I assumed it would be deadly hot under all that glass, but actually, the turret ventilates itself very well once the fans start turning, and it was comfortable in there.

Image

And there we are, downwind for runway 25 at our home base of Mount Comfort. The plane flew good and strong, as she has every time this year. We'll be doing light maintenance today, and then in a couple weeks we'll be taking her to Peoria. That's a big show, one that was hugely enjoyable last year, and we're really looking forward to it.

So that's the report for this time, WIXers. Stay tuned for more!

Great pictures! I had to chuckle a little when I saw the first one, taken shortly after they swung the tail around into position for runup and sent ramp rats chasing all those orange road cones because of the prop wash.

It was a fun show and great seeing the Hot Stuff crew as always.

I have a short video of her taxiing in after they landed if anyone is interested.

Greg

Hi Gang! Looks like y'all are doing some good things! And havin' fun as well!! Great job Glen!! I am so happy to see Hot Stuff making the rounds in style....as usual, my hats off to the great crew that keeps H.S. purring!
Dave had Attu Warrior out doing a tour in Utah...He was down in St. George, then a short hop north to Cedar City...He told me they had a V.R. problem, that cooked the battery from over charging it...he was supposed to have a spare battery brought down today, but haven't heard from him...
Good to see you're back on the keypad there IndyJen!
Glen, I still haven't been home yet.....Wife says it's rained almost every day since I'd left...Was planning to be home this weekend...but that got changed....I might have to float my wings out to ya...

Hi Gary et al-

Thanks for the kind words, and your efforts on our behalf. It's been quite the labor of love to get her to this point, and with any luck from this point forward there won't be any more fork lifts, trailers, or bucket brigades involved in our maintenance activities. I couldn't be more proud of our tiny, bedraggled, and tuckered out crew. When you look at the total context of what's been achieved it's pretty amazing, especially given we are just a bunch of volunteers who (theoretically) have lives and responsibilities outside of AMHF.

Below is a pic of the happy crew during our outing to Kokomo.

Image
Left to right are Paula, Steve, Don, Jen, and Gaylon.

And here is a pic from the day we closed out the grant process with the DNR for the new engine. Three folks had come out to witness the event and certify that we had achieved the goal set out in the grant application. And be out at the airport on a beautiful day... :D

Image
That's Rich, Gaylon, Roy, and me.

We plan on Peoria July 23-25, and hope to see a few WIX folks then-
