ME-262 Visit

Fri Jun 11, 2010 12:59 pm

On my recent outing with the bombers a couple of us flew up to Ione (in a borrowed Mooney) to have a look at the 262. The airplane is progressing...I've attached a few photos here. The leading edge slats are the main focus for now. The work being done is magnificent and will insure a reliable airframe for a long long time. Don't ask when it will be done...we don't know yet but the push is for Thunder.

No...that is Jayson Owen, our B-24 mechanic. It does look better...the last 10% of the work takes 90% of the time.

Jim: Tight fit in that cockpit isn't it....I got a chance to sit in the one at an AFM open house years ago and was way suprized at how tight it was for me. I would have had a terrible time trying to fly one for real.

Well done Jim, Its a treat to get into Ione. When I brought my C-140A, I really wanted to pop in there but nobody was around. Is the B-23 still parked outside??

What work is being done on her? I was of the impression that she was bought in flying condition, or is there something I missed? Thanks for posting the photos.

Cheers,
Richard

The British Transport Ministry inspectors would go nuts on seeing the GPS antennas inside the canopys.

yeah vlado...thankfully we only have the FAA to deal with! It was "airworthy" when it came in...now it is more airworthy. :)

What's the story behind that?

The Brit inspectors are requiring all the Mustang owners to install their GPS antennas in front of the windscreen and unpainted. They work perfectly well inside the canopy on the rear deck AND will pass certification in the back, to boot! A few owners had tried to get them to change, to no avail.
(Probably the very same inspector/bandits who allow green painted gear doors  )
