That's funny Rick...when I was explaining the seeming attitude reversal of the NHC and USAFM to a friend
I said, "It's as if the Navy quit drinking whatever wacky koolaid they been consuming and sent
the leftover supply to USAFM"!

Ya know Don, It makes me sick to my stomach too!!I wanted that as my next project and I almost cryed when it left here to be put on some stupid static display in a museum and never ever to be flown again.
Just think how cool would it have been to be a passenger in the other pod and on an escort with the B-29. Who wouldn't what to do that???
Come on man???

Right it would have been cool, and still possible if the CAF had cooperated. I suggest you read the take back the CAF thread as there is much to do about the P-82 hidden in there. Then again it wouldn't happen because the CAF was trying to get rid of it anyway. That's one of the reasons it's sitting where it is. It makes me sick to see people complain about the P-82, but only wish to tell the part of the story how the big bad NMUSAF took the plane. We wouldn't want to tell of the meetings where the CAF was told they could keep the plane, fly it, just can't get rid of it, and the leadership of the CAF said, "In your ear".

And now you know why I said "The less said, the better"... there were significant mistakes made on both sides of the equation, certainly. For the record, the men and women who work for the NMUSAF are fine folks, by and large... my outright disdain is reserved solely for the uppermost level of management within that facility. Wait, let me correct myself- them, and whatever chucklehead thought it would be a great idea to stuff all those aircraft into a black hanger, lit only by three 60w bulbs. :D

Thanks for that Lynn. I know that most people here have a somewhat good opinion of the voumteers at NMUSAF, and that the main problems people have are with the high end leadership. I too have had issues with some of the ideas that they have come up with, however after seeing both sides of the story, I just can not see why there is an attitude about the NMUSAF in regards to the P-82, when they tried to work with the CAF, even allowing it to continue to fly. If you want to be upset about the P-82 not flying, go and blame the CAF, the NMUSAF tried to work something out at least. And for the record, this is not a knock on the CAF. I am a CAF fan. Do they have some issues? Sure. There isn't a group that doesnt. But the CAF gang is a cool group, and I am fortunate to have many friends in the CAF. They do a great job of keeping the planes flying. Just I have strong feelings due to my association with the NMUSAF, others feel the same with their association with the CAF or the CF. And there is nothing wrong with that. But it wouldn't hurt to consider those people when talking about a subject.

What kool aid were you smoking " USAFM was going to let the CAF keep the P-82 and even let her fly" Never ever heard that one and if you have proof then the CAF leadership should all be fired then tarred and feathered.

Although I haven't read them in a while, my recollection is that the USAF's legal pleadings pretty much said what Chris says.

and if you have proof then the CAF leadership should all be fired then tarred and feathered.

Isn't that happening anyway? :D

Chris,

The Air Force museum never said the CAF could keep the airplane and fly it. They told the CAF they could keep it for static display only.

I know for a fact, as do one or two others on this board, that the Air Force Museum even went as far as threats of action on other airplanes that they have "loaned" to the CAF, based on the fact that they weren't being kept up to display standards as layed out in the original paperwork!

Brad first off please know I reply to this meaning nothing but to be respectful, but the NMUSAF did indeed offer to let the CAF continue to operate the P-82. After the 2nd time of telling them where to go, the CAF was told that it would be static only. The first two attempts to work something out, were going to leave the CAF able to fly the P-82. It was only when court and lawyers were invloved that the "Static" terms were brought inalong with other aircraft.
