Warbird Information Exchange

Good afternoon all.

Next Monday I will be travelling to the beautiful state of Ohio travelling south on 1-75. My two sons ( aged 20 and 22) will betravelling with me. First stop will be the Air Force museum in Dayton on the Tuesday and then travel onwards to Canton to see the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Wednesday and a visit to MAPS on Thursday before heading home.

I have been told I should spend more than one day in Dayton but the boys could only get a total of 4 days off.

If we get to Dayton early enough we may be able to squeeze a late afternoon visit. I plan on leaving home around 06:00 and am hoping to be in the Dayton area between 1 and 2 pm.

I am wondering if anyone can suggest hotels/motels in both the Dayton and Canton areas as well as restaurants. As I mentioned we will be coming down I-75 from Detroit/Toledo way after crossing into the USA. We will be GPS equipped to assist in navigating.

The true north strong and free

In Dayton there is a new hotel that is very nice and affordable right across the street from the air forcemuseum. Comfort Inn. You can't miss it, it is right infront of the museum. They have a pool, and it is a very new and clean hotel. Free breakfast as well.

In Akron there are some hotels right infront of the Akron Airport. All of which are nicer hotels, and not priced too bad.

That's an easy one, skip the football hall of fame!

I agree with Chris, while I haven't stayed there the hotel across the street from the Air Force museum is very convenient. I've been to the museum 3 times in the last 20 years, and each trip a full day was just never quite enough.

If you've never been, you'll really enjoy it. If you've been before then you already know...

Hi Jeff, If you find yourself pressed for time at the NMUSAF, be sure and go to the very back of the museum in the 3rd building to see the missile gallery. You will not be disappointed!

Coming down I-75 you will be going right pass the Neil Armstrong Museum at Wapakoneta. It has a reasonable fee and doesn't take too long to go thru ... It also has a short film. It's quite interesting if your interested in space .... I believe the exit is 111 ... but check me on that.

My first trip there I spent 3 days at the Air Force Museum, and I made it through the Football HOF in a little over 2 hours. Especially considering the extra driving you would have to do, and extra day would be worthwhile at the Air Force Museum.

What time you plan on being at MAPS? I'll try to meet you.

I’ve logged more than 100 hours there and I expect one afternoon won’t give you as much time as you need to really enjoy the place.

Akron/Canton - MAPS area:

Restaurants- just south of the airport off of I-77 you will find lots of choices off of the Portage rd exit or Everhard exits. If you leave MAPS and go north on rt 241 there is a good southwestern sit-down. Oh yeah, there's also a 356th fighter group restaurant at CAK too.

Hotels - There's a new Hilton Garden in front of the airport off I-77, and a new Cambria Suites north of MAPS on rt 241 and I-77 i-x. There's also a Super 8 there if you're thinking inexpensive (all 3 are in a nice area).

same here. My first trip to Dayton, we spent 3 days there. Now the football hall of fame took more than 2 hours for me but I'm a Pittsburgh Steelers fan. So for me it was also a religous experience. Then again so is the Air Force Museum.

No contest. Air Force Museum for minimum of 2 days and then whatever.
We went last summer and didn't see it all in 2 days but had a schedule to keep.

Restoration Hanger Tours are ONLY on Fridays with advance reservations. Worth evey bit!! Especially seeing the GREAT progress on the Memphis Bell. Presidential & R&D Hanger tours are daily. Been there three times this year for extended weekends and still haven't seen it all yet! Korean War display opening soon also!

BTW: On the top of the hill is the Wright Brother's Museum that overlooks the Museum on one side and the USAF Base on the other.
Also you can see Huffman Prarie Flying Field where the Wrights did their testing.
