USAAF Douglas C-47 "Hairless Joe"

Hi all, I'm trying to find some info on this USAAF Douglas C-47 "Hairless Joe". It was found in my grandfathers collection after he passed away, he was a reconn photographer attached to RAAF 31 Beaufighter Sqdn, this aircraft could have been sighted during their mop-up operations in the Pacific during 1944-45. There appears to be an "L" next to the cockpit window, would this have been for pilot training?

Hi Mike,
Glad to see you over here, and see you've registered OK! Just a clarification, our American cousins may be confused by the name under which you are asking - Dakota was the RAF / Commonwealth air forces name for the type, and while there were many different names in US service the fallback one is normally Douglas C-47.

There is also this image of another C-47/DC-3? most likely taken at Morotai or Tarakan in 1945. Only ID is a "V?? on the tail.
