Hi All,have not been near the Corsair for a number of weeks so data plates are not sighted yet,I do remember seeing some damage on the aft Lh tailcone area that was reskinned and the RH wing does have the anchor nuts for the radome but that was missing.There is no evidence of any damage from a wheels up landing either to the centre section or outer wing panels,I am pretty sure I have seen the number 124493 inside the rear fuse access door on a data plate but will double check all the suggested locations when I am back there next,interesting that 608 has the coolers listed as missing and damage to the LH air duct area,both coolers were missing on this machine but the RH air duct area was damaged.The lower air duct panel was actually destroyed by fire with only the rear milled piece of the panel left.Makes me wonder if someone could not tell L from R when looking at the aircraft front on!!!Best Regards,Pete Bradley

Look fwd to see the pictures of the F4U-5 in the Missouri area. So far, the only evidence that we have of work being done in the aft section of the fuselage in Australia is the enclosed pictures by Mr. G. Hoskings c. 2008. We are digging for info & pics in NZ also. Photo via Samurai02.

I've been away from the photo search for a few weeks but I'm getting ready to start sorting another box of negatives and slides this week. I'll also make it a point to call Dr. Mullen's son and ask if he has been able to locate any files or photos of the -5 when it was in St. Louis. If anything turns up, I'll post photos this week.

A month or so back, I started cleaning up Dr. Mullen's old office at our airport so that I could use it to sell off the turret parts. While moving all of his physics and engineering books onto one set of shelf units, I noticed a small black notebook sitting between two hefty books titled "Particle Collision Physics" and "Re-entry Vehicle Communications". The notebook contains a list expense notes and contacts from probably 79' to 81'. Pretty much anyone who had anything to do with a -4 or -5 Corsair is noted in the contact section.

As far as the question of what a/c my father and Dr. Mullen thought they purchased, John's notes clearly show "Serial # 124493" on the back of the first page. The number "724" is just below the s/n. Was there a -5 with s/n 124724? There is also a contact for "Bob Mears" at 420 74th St (zip) 60515. Is that you Rob? No news yet from Dr. Mullen's son so I doubt he has had time to look for photos or information yet.

My sister and I have been scanning and loading photos from the old days. She found this image of the F4U-5 project that we had at Arrowhead A/P. If she has this one then she probably has more so I'll post anything that looks interesting. I'm still wondering if we had the front of one airplane and the tail of another. I think it was all the same BU # but I'm just not sure.

p.s Did anyone take any cockpit shots??

I'm sure this must be some but I have not located them yet. The cockpit photos of this plane would really help determine for certain which plane it is. I guess we have all more or less figured it out but there some lingering doubts.

124724 is still at La Ferté Alais and the aircraft still owned par Mr SALIS, i'm involved on the restoration of this Corsair, any news of his history could interest me!

Great shots of Mr. Salis's -5, thanks for posting. No idea why John Mullen's notes show "724" below the s/n. It may have nothing to do with 124724 but it does seem like he was trying to figure something out about the S/N. Here's another shot at Arrowhead A/P.

Hi all,has anyone come across any recent info on the serial # in question,I have been all over our -5 and can not find any data plates that reference either serial no apart from the tag in the rear fuse mentioned previously.The engine is in and we are progressing on controls,cowls,and fuel system,I'm really looking fwd to seeing the beast run & fly!!!Merry Christmas to all,regards,Pete
