B-18 Bolo 36-446 of the 11th Bombardment Group, went down on a training mission before the war. Here is a link with more data and some more pics at the Aviation Wreckchasers site

It's a Douglas B-18 Bolo, discussed numerous times on WIX, including some very informative posts by the owner of the land it is on.

Seeing that pic really gets me fired up. Every time I see something like that it makes we want to go on a " expedition". Let's go find something... To the jungle and beyond!

I know there was some scuttle-butt about Pacific Aviation Museum Pearl Harbor group collecting it for the museum, but that is all, just talk so far as I've heard. Many $$$$$$$$'s to just collect her, and then many many more to restore even to static. Anyone heard any NEW news on her fate?

Aloha everyone, this is that landowner mentioned above...

Discussions are seriously underway for eventual removal of the Bolo to the Pacific Air Museum for long term protection. Rather than static restoration, we envision a far more interesting diorama type display reproducing as closely as possible the aspect of the plane as it now sits. However this could be some time into the future.

In the interim, we envision creating an exhibit where it now sits. Unfortunately access could only be by helicopter, thus expensive- seriously limiting the number of people who could experience the plane. Also, while we would do our best to protect it from vandals and the elements, it will only last so long in a cloud forest. So it needs to be removed to the Museum for future generations.

Sorry about the belated update. Hopefully I will have more specific news for you soon.

Chris

Wow, that's fantastic Chris! I'm really glad that you and the other owners have the foresight to preserve part of our nation's history, unlike some other landowners who will not allow access or recovery of wrecks on their property. I can hardly wait to see it in the Museum some day! I'm glad that you all are supporters of history.

Hmmmm. looks like the perfect opportunity for a joint military training mission regarding "aircraft recovery operations" with the USAF and the Aviation Branch of the US Army. Well placed hoisting cables in the lifting mounts (if available-like found on the B-25 ie hoisting the B-25s on the Hornet) use of a CH-47, lift that sucker right outta there and hide'er in a hangar for a while. I know there is more to a recovery than that guys so ease up. A joint recovery operation could be accomplished though and training could be of an asset to the gov-mint.

We recovered a PV-1 like that once with the Canadian military and a Chinook and actually there wasn't a heck of a lot more to it than that.
