P-59: end of the line

Ever wonder why there aren't more P-59s around? This series of LIFE photos, taken in January, 1951, tell part of the story. If you're an Airacomet fan, it might be best not to look!

Interesting photos... thanks for posting. Don't 'spose you noticed that it's been mis-labled as an F-89 in the caption!

No number on the tail I can see, but the buzz number PJ-783 means it's most likely YP-59A 42-108783, the drone controller with a second seat in the nose.

Maybe not quite mislabeled - judging by the other photos, the Scorpion was using the Airacomet for target practice!

I'm assuming the F-89's were using it for target practice.
