A place where restoration project-type threads can go to avoid falling off the main page in the WIX hangar. Feel free to start threads on Restoration projects and/or warbird maintenance here. Named in memoriam for Gary Austin, a good friend of the site and known as RetroAviation here. He will be sorely missed.

Proceeds will go toward the purchase of an aircraft sponsorship in Gary's name for the B-24 and the B-29. They measure 3" X4" and are darker green than the picture I took shows. PROCEEDS????????
It sounds disgustingly LOW to me.
How about $20.00 a piece or $50.00 for three?

It bothers me just a bit, that more of you are not posting and ordering the stickers for the memory of Gary Austin. So many watched and posted during his laborous efforts on transforming Diamond Lil into Ol' 927. I want to be able to fulfill the hope of many of us, that we can honor him with a restoration sponsorship for this aircraft as well as the the B-29, that he spent 18 months on, only to see that project come to a screeching halt, because of the inferior engines. This man put his heart and soul into these aircraft. He worked many sleepless nights andcountless hours for the benefit of all of us, to continue to enjoy these national treasures. Gary left the CAF with some heartburn , but the airplanes that he loved were not the issue. I can tell you honestly, he was still very interested in what I was doing and very vocal about where I was headed with certain aspects of the project. I always listened, even though I didn't always agree. I miss him and many of us do as well. Please consider a donation in his memory and I promise, you will be rewarded by a memory that will live with you, forever!

The stickers are great! I've got one on my car and one will be on my Fouga when I'm done with the restoration!

Do you accept Paypal for the stickers? I'll even include the 3% fee. Now, as I am modeling Ole 927 as an 80" wingspan RC airplane, I have some questions. In the previous page, the pic of her shows external opening doors for the nose gear. As she is a B24A I was curious as to when this "swap" was performed? The external doors didn't go into effect until the B24G's (maybe that's an impossible question to answer.). I'm not sure how to model this, as accurately as a B24A, or as accurately as Ole 927! I know Gary had planned on eventual bomb bay doors and I may do that as well. What are peoples thoughts? Build the model as Ole 927 currently sits, the way Gary left her, or finish it how his dreams of her being would be? Also, has anyone archived all the pics in this thread? I would love to have them saved locally on my laptop for reference material. And last...is anybody local enough to Ole 927 to get some measurements of her tail? If I can get a measurement from her rear wings leading edge to the end of her tail and the height of her tail where Gary's work is attached to her fuselage, that would be a tremendous help! Thanks in advance and I hope I'm not asking too much!

We can't do PayPal as we speak but that is being worked on. As far as measurements for your models, we can do that!! Do what Gary did and if and when we get to finish his dream, we'll do that one too.

Yes please, order some of the stickers. Several of us worked hard to create just a small reminder of Gary's life and his impact upon us all.

Devilbrad, If you want to build it as Ol '927, then certain parts are not going to be correct for a true A model. I would suggest building it as she sits, but maybe with the bomb bay functional.

Check going out this week for stickers. Yeah, I will model it as she sits but with the bomb bay doors.

The 'swap' you are referring to happened late in the war when Consolidated removed AM927's stubby B-24A nose and replaced it with a (then new) RY-3 transport nose (ie: faired over B-24J type nose).
IIRC it was the prototype for the C-87 transport.

As for your model, I'd say build her as she is now. There's a lot more references on this thread alone than there are on the B-24A.

And sorry, can't help with the measurements. It's a bit of a drive for me!

I received my stickers in the mail yesterday. Today I put this together. The picture is from the Ghost 2009 calendar, and the disk is a piece that was removed from Diamond Lil. :)

OK, that make complete sense. I forgot it once had the RY-3 nose, even though I saved all the CCC pics, LOL

Just curious about the turn around on the stickers?

Ol' 927 in AOPA Pilot!

Sun Feb 28, 2010 8:19 pm

Just got the March issue of AOPA pilot from the mailbox and notice that there's a nice spread on Ol'927 written by CAF Colonel Barry Schiff (one of Dan's compatriots at the SoCal Wing) starting on page 70.

AOPA members take a look! If you're not an AOPA member - Become one! :)
