Warbird Information Exchange

Anyone have any clear photos or manuals showing the markings placed on Mk82 500 lb. and Mk83 1000 lb. bombs during the Vietnam era? I've been able to find good shots of present day markings but nothing as yet covering the earlier versions. Also any ideas as to when the M47A1 WP bomb was superseded by the -A2,
-A3 and -A4 versions?

Just trying to get the details right on a little project we've got going on...

Just flipped through the ordnance section of Mutza's "A-1 Skyraider in Vietnam" and there are alot of good general photos, but not any of the actual stenciling on those particular weapons - although maybe some of the WP bombs.

If you're willing to spend :45 scrolling through the various images at http://skyraider.org/skyassn/imcol.htm you're bound to find some good stuff, much of it in color, particularly CBU, and with (probably) the clarity to discern the stencils ... but maybe not exactly what you were hoping for.

It may not fit your project, but CBU looks like it'd be easy to fabricate from aluminum tube and flat stock ... just in case there was a "Sandy load" somewhere in your plan.

Ken, I've spent a LOT more than :45 studying the pics at Skyraider.org. Lots of good detail there but it never quite shows what I need. SUU-14's? Hmm, might be some potential there

The F-89 has been mostly re-assembled and is on display as-is. Should start some of the restoration work soon; after we get a couple of other projects done.

Have you tried contacting the USAF HRA (Historical Research Agency) at Maxwell AFB or the NMUSAF? I don't have the numbers handy but a web search should produce a hit. The other would be the Armament Museum at Eglin AFB. Surely one of those has the exact data you're lookin' for.
