What type of bomb is this?

Tue Jan 19, 2010 7:31 pm

Any ideas as to what type it is? No markings on it that I could find.
Appox. 25" long, 20-25lbs.

Looks like a BDU-33 B/B Practice Bomb. Here is a link to a pic and how it works

25 pound practice bomb. The hole in the nose was for a spotting smoke charge.

It's a MK-76 practice bomb. I loaded a million of them which our squadron
deposited all over Fallon 8) , El Centro  and Broadman :) . At night a flash
bang is used and during the day a smoke charge to see the POI. If he doesn't
want it i'll take it! I have one the I stole (can I say that?) by shoving in my pants
(should I have said that?) and walking out the ramp gate when a squadie was on duty

Mk 76 Mod 5
The Mk 76 Mod 5 is a 25-pound, solid, metal-cast, practice bomb. Its body is teardrop shaped and centrally bored to permit the insertion of a practice bomb signal cartridge. The after body, which covers the tail tube, is crimped to the bomb body and has welded-on tail fins. The bomb is designed with single lug suspension, using the Mk 14 suspension lug. The Mk 76 Mod 5 practice bomb is designed for impact firing only. It uses the Mk 1 firing pin assembly to initiate the practice bomb signal cartridge. The bomb signal and the firing pin assembly are held in the bomb by means of a cotter pin. The bomb is painted blue. The identification nomenclature is stenciled in white letters on the bomb body.

Navy guys and their weird nomenclature for otherwise normal items.
