Hey sorry we didn't get to meet up, right after you called we had to move the T-33 and then something happened that they needed me for and it took a while. SO you thought the show went great?

thought the show was great. well organized too. nice line up of planes. the only thing i don't like is when they rope the viewing area to move the planes, then your practically stuck where you stand. the static display planes should be in 1 area & the the show flying ones in another. they do that at the cleveland airshow, & it always works well. albatross was a nice surprise as was the spitfire. who's spit is that anyway?? regards, tom

Static and active should be in the same area like Geneseo which I hear is based on Oshkosh. It works very well for the props, but of course would not be a good format involving jets. What was at this airshow you attended. Just curious. I don't know much about it.

Do you want to find locations of displayed, stored or active aircraft? Then start with the The Locator.
Do you want to find or contribute to the documented history of an aircraft? If so then start with the Airframes Database.

It works well only if the show doesn't shut the whole area down when a/c start flying.

I’ve been to many shows that close down the area that all the WW2 Fighters are parked. So for 90% of the show no one can get close access to them, National Warplane Museum at Elmira was great for this. 2003 Thunder of Michigan did this (I haven't been back yet). And this year at the “Corsairs over Ct” all the Corsairs were 30 feet behind the Crowd line. I never got to walk around any of the Corsairs there only the B-25J was accessible to the public. I know it is a major bother for the crews working the show but…

The Flyers and Static’s should be separated if the flight line is going to be closed. Who wants to go to an airshow and not be able to walk up to or around all the aircraft?

Jet aircraft are a Different story; you have the FOD and jet thrust issue.

EDIT:

I don't mean to slam any shows. It’s an observation I have made. I’m generally one of the first in and last out so I get the shots I want with few people in the way. Maybe its just something to think about and consider?

True.

Ed Russell's show was the same thing, except you could't get out to see the planes up close at all!

I was thinking more along the lines of spectators become the "O" in "FOD"! :(

I agree. Still nothing is better than Gennie for their arrangement and presentation.

1. Most of the aircraft requested to fly, so it would be impossible to keep them all roped off. If that were the case, you would have only been able to walk around 2 F-18, 2 C-130, CH-47, Ju-52, C-47 and that would of been about it. Everyone else flew in the massive flybys.

2. I didn't like how the crowd got stranded either.

3. I liked the albatross too. I haven't saw one of those.

4. Spit is owned by Fighter Factory in VA.

5. How do you think this compares to Cleveland in aircraft lineup, flying, vendors, ect....?

i'm taking up tim's stand on things, re : aircraft placement etc. corsair event at mt comfort indiana a few years ago had a great arrangement in that regard!! at akron vendors were much better, parking was great. my only beefs were being stranded at the ropes, & it took awhile to get some birds in the air, but that really can't be helped other wise the show was very good. best tom

Ya I thought that some of the CAP kids took their job WAY to seriously. A couple of the planes like the Spitfire requested that they be pushed out and hour before their flight. Why, I don't know.

yes, move the bird 1 hour prior to take off....that would have helped, & eased the inconvenience to the crowd. no criticisim, or bashing here as, tim the wix brew master implied, just constructive suggestions for next time. bottom line it is tough as hell to co organize any airshow where hundreds of people are involved, following faa & govt. safety regs etc!!! it's enough to make your head spin.  nothing runs perfect, still a great show though. best, tom

Thanks for the input. We've been trying to get input on houw to make the show better. It's hard to please the pilot and the crowd as well as be safe all at once.

i was talking to a customer / friend yesterday who has a cherry usn stearman restoration in pre- ww2 navy color scheme, he was at the maps show with his baby, & we discussed the fact of the lack of genuine ww 2 aces, aviation personalities of that era that were not their. no fault of the museum.... ww 2 vets are dying at the rate of 1000 a day nation wide. my dad, now 89, an infantry co. commander is still around, so i'm among the lucky ones. but when they all pass what will be the personal draw??? korean vets / aces are not far behind, vietnam we had steve ritchie & randy cunningham, desert storm / shield??? no aces to my knowledge. a real dilemma to the future airshow industry. :( best, tom
