The last time out I left my glove there though.

Thanks for posting a photo of the old C-3. Used to build time in one at Maj. Hugh Watson's field on the north side of Cincinnati before the war. Always liked the early razorback C-3 best. My "prior time" helped me get into fighters.

For my taste the LT-14 is the most spectacular of the bunch. Who built it?

The guy in the red hat in the picture below, Matty Laird. To the design of Roscoe Turner, celebrated racing and stunt pilot.



The Laird-Turner is nice, but for my money the best looking of the American racers of that period was the Travel Air Mystery Ship. Probably I can best make my case by posting some clearer pics:

Well I actually know who built the original racer, but I was wondering who built the replica?
There was a white-black stripped Mystery Ship in Italy for some time. I think the Italian Air Force operated it and it was mainly flown by Stopani - a World War one ace.
Another european project.
The Klemm L.20 replica. Not exactly the ordinary racer, but a few records were broken with it.

Not replicas! The R-4 airframe is substantially original (wings and fuselage) while the R-6 has the original wing and a reproduction fuselage built by a WW2 F4U pilot named Carl (forgot his last name after all these years) who flew with VMF-214 I believe.

Oh, sorry, I misunderstood.

The Laird-Turner replica was built by Bill Turner (no relation to Roscoe), who built several stupendous racer replicas under the name of Repeat Aircraft in Flabob, California. Also by him are the Brown B-2, Gee Bee Z, Miles-Atwood, Howard Pete, and Pobjoy that are pictured above, as well as a beautiful DH88 Comet that has not been pictured here yet.

By the way, if you would like to build some charming paper models of most of the aircraft we have been discussing here, including the Laird-Turner, check out the downloadable paper models available from:

Their models are easy to build, roughly accurate, and great looking. They make up as nice Christmas tree ornaments if you are the sort of person who would display miniature airplanes on your Christmas tree.

I am trying to ID the make of this airplane and was wondering if might possibly be the one listed as competing in the 1930 Air Race, with original configuration. I do believe the photo dates to that time period.

Welcome Fhoy, it doesn't really fit the description of the Roche' bird with the outrigger wheels on the wingtips, but I've not seen photos of the Roche' racer yet.

Do you have the complete results for all classes of the National Air Races? I've only located the "big iron" data online.

Sorry Baldeagle, but Jim's Aeronca C-3 wasn't yet built in 1930..., it was built in 1932.

Hola Virgil! According to a Feb. 2004 Vintage Aircraft Article by Bud Davisson, 1931 Second-Hand Airplane, It's a 1931 that wasn't delivered until 1932...not to split hairs. I've also seen it as participating in the 1933 National so I'm a bit confused in lieu of having all the class results available.
