OUCH! Great news that no one was hurt..hopefully the damage is fairly minor.

I've heard stories of how squirrelly Bf-109s were on takeoff and landing. Did Spits suffer a similar accident rate during the war?

Bad news for the airplane! Glad the pilot walked away! Happy to know that the news agencies around the world are in the same boat as the U.S. At least when it comes to dumb quotes.

Not all that far fetched really. He was obviously in motion when it happened and in the confusion getting out might not have properly shut it down. It happens.
It's common for those qualified arriving on the scene to double check everything is OFF.
On the other hand, if you meant that the media usually misstates something in their reporting, I'd be the first one to agree with you. Some of the stuff they release after these things is absolutely unbelievable

Dave M2, I don't know "Doug" the pilot and owner, not even by reputation, and most certainly I don't know the circumstances of either accident, but if I can be of any use to the owner I'd be happy to talk to him if and when he is ready. What is the experience level of the pilot? Does he have a lot of taildragger and/or high performance time?

Doug has been flying for approx 30 years and I last saw him display at the Classic Fighters airshow over Easter this year in his MX-2.
Very experienced except on the Spitfire as a type. Lets hold off judgement until the accident report comes out.

What an idiot! Hopefully he will sell it to someone else that will take the proper steps and time to get the proper flight instruction in Stearman, T-6, etc. and will take care of the aircraft. It sure looks like his ego has gotten the best of him.

Like Avenger said, let's not judge him until we have all of the facts. We don't know that inexperience in type and/or training was causal to the crash, do we? I only asked about his background and experience to gain an appreciation of where he came from. I didn't know if he was a new pilot or not. Since the pilot was a former aerobatic champion, it sounds like he is not a novice to tailwheel types. He sounds very similar to Kermit Weeks in his background. BTW, accidents can happen to the most experienced of people. Even Kermit crashed an airplane in the recent past, so nobody is immune.
