The P-39 and SeaFury beside it on the line, I was told that Bob Hoover had once flown this
P-51, and that the back half had been replaced after a line boy over filled the oxygen bottle
that it once had, which blew up, and blew the plane in half.

Vernon also, if my memory serves, flew one of the two B-25's from Dothan to San Marcos for John. I think he flew the one that is now "Maid in the Shade". I remember that the one he flew in almost had a prop problem. A cam in the hub was almost broken in two. I don't remember needing to get a new one for the Rose, so I'm thinking it was the other one he flew.
The Sandy Sansing that owned the car dealership must have been a different one. My Sandy retired from the USAF as a full bird in 1973, then went to work for John Stokes as a flight instructor. He taught me for both my private and multi tickets, but not through the flight school. Did it as a friend.
Lynn, Bill flew John's P-51 like you wouldn't believe! Bill flew them in Korea, so he was the most qualified Mustang pilot around San Marcos...other than possibly Sandy, but Bill's time was more "recent"!
