what are the hash marks on the left side of the canopy used for?? i remember this was explained in another thread but can't remember the reason.

IIRC, those marks are various reference angle's for dive-bombing.

These days, the marks are often used for reference when performing aerobatics. When a pilot is learning a new plane or a new acro sequence, the marks can sometimes help find an exact 45-degree line - both upright and inverted - especially after the attitude gyro has tumbled (which it is prone to do).
