The thread about the clamps reminded me that there were "No Easy Days", same as the documentary film of that title.................

Photo Description; A Douglas A-1H Skyraider (BuNo 134563) of U.S. Navy attack squadron VA-152 Friendlies after a wheels-up emergency landing at Da Nang, South Vietnam, in December 1965. VA-152 was assigned to Attack Carrier Air Wing 16 (CVW-16) aboard the aircraft carrier USS Oriskany (CVA-34) for a deployment to Vietnam from 5 April to 16 December 1965. The foam visible was used to ensure a relatively smooth wheels-up landing. The aircraft with a tail hook also used an arresting cable, so that the damaged aircraft would slide to a quick halt.

Photo Description; A U.S. Navy Douglas A3D-2 Skywarrior (BuNo 138955) of heavy attack squadron VAH-9 Hoot Owls pictured after its nose wheel collapsed during recovery on board the carrier USS Saratoga (CVA-60), 1959-1960. Note the open canopy. As a high altitude strategic bomber the A3D (after 1962 A-3) was not equipped with ejection seats and the crew was expected to jump off with parachutes in case of an emergency. Date 1959-1960

Da-yum, that's one violent crash... makes my back hurt just lookin' at it. Also, re the A3D... there's a reason Naval Aviators referred to the aircraft as "All 3 Dead". :(

Dude, you're landing the wrong way! Downwind landings are not fun on aircraft carriers! :D
