I have just been led to this amazing collection of pictures of late 60s to early 70s US (and Japanese) airpower in Japan, 68 pages, up to 18 pictures per page!

Some of the serials are probably worth cross checking to see if there are any survivours.

F-102s, 104s, 105s, Phantoms, Warning Stars, B-57s, C-124s etc. etc...........Drool

Not to mention the odd Air America and World Airways airliner.

FANTASTIC Shots from Late 60s/early 70s in Japan. While most USAF aircraft had lost the color of the 50s and early 60s by this time, it was an exciting era, with a tremendous variety of jet aircraft and piston-engined aircraft in service.

From an aircraft spotter's/enthusiast's perspective those were interesting times.

Fan-bleedin'-tastic... the detailed shots of the "bird farms" tied up at Sasebo are AWESOME, especially the shots of Hancock!

I THINK that Itazuke Air Base is now Fukoka? Anyone confirm? Kind of a small strip to have that kind of hardware going in and out of.

I love the old stuff...all of it...but for some reason I really liked that TF-9-F towards the end. As well as the shot of the World Airways 707. The spec-ops C-130's were pretty cool. And the B-57's. And the Stoof's with the offset bombay (I think it's an S2C). And the Voodoos. And the...and the...and the....

Anyone know what the photos of the crash into the building are of?

Just got to those... looks like it's RF-4C 66-0412, it crashed into a computer lab at Kyushu University (?) on 2 Jun 69, trying to find out more right now. I'm assuming it was on landing, since the flaps were deployed, but stand to be corrected on that point.

What about the WB-57 with the jet pods under the wing? Did a search and couldn't find any info on it. Why would that monster, with all that wing area, need more power? Only picture I can find of that configuration.

The toasted 101 was kinda neat as well.

I love the shot of the Marine Grumman TF-9J Cougar (F9F-8T/pre Sep 62), also. Hard to tell the exact date of photo in some of these, but based on the "68" seen in the text in some of the adjacent photos, perhaps that is the date of the Cougar shot also. This was probably close to the time that the Cougar saw its only combat duty when it was assigned for FAC duties out of Da Nang in South Vietnam.

Iteresting also that apparently someone mislabled the aircraft in the photo as an F-11A (F11F-1) Tiger rather than an F-9 Cougar.

What? Took a picture out of your Suburban as two Thuds and two Phantoms flew over?
