1971 California 1000 (at Mojave)

Fri Oct 16, 2009 5:21 pm

Does anyone know if the 1971 California 1000 was covered by any of the 'flying rags' at the time? Most likely it would have been Air Progress and/or Sport Flying...as Air Comix had not yet had a drink of the air racing Kool Aid, and Flying only showed up at Reno out of curiosity every few years.

David Esler and/or Mike Dillon may have had a hand in it...and I can't fathom a race that John Tegler didn't somehow write something about.

I have not been able to locate anything, and if anyone can point me to any specific month/issues I would be much obliged.

Thoughts?

That magazine details the 1970 race. Not 71 I'm afraid.

Pretty Cool - That was from Bob Guilford's library - Bob was killed in a Hawker Hunter crash a few years ago, he was a really great guy. I didn't realize he raced in that event.

Bob's son posts here occasionally and has some outstanding photos on his site from "the old days."
