I think we can all agree that the C-130 has the longest production run of any military aircraft in history.

And the only civil ac that comes close would be the Beech Bonanza...but the current production Model 36 has a different fuselage and engine that the original Model 35 of 1947. So it it really the same aircraft?

I never realized there was that much stuff hanging in the breeze on the AC-130U.

IR missile defense systems (flares, jammers), plus shrouds around the aft section of the engines.

Add in all the optical and IR viewing stuff and the guns, and that's one dirty airplane. No wonder their performance is lower than stock 130's...

I love the ones that were still in their original polished aluminum with the reflective orange for Deep Freeze ops.

The basement of the Lockheed plant in Marietta is huge. There are a lot of folks who have their offices in the basement.

The one that comes to my mind is the Marshall's of Cambridge 'stretch' to RAF Herks.

Unarguably one of the most important aircraft in history.

Try a search on 'XV208' for some more of Marshall's work.

For clarification the second picture in APG85's post is NOT an AC-130U, she is an HC.

Thank for posting the photos of 1667 looking great, she was always such a sweet girl. 1665-68 were always tops in my memory.

Parked next to 1666 (on spot 13) on the Green Ramp at Pope one time and we had a windshield inexplicably shatter followed by the flap gauge starting to travel CCW. Guys still tell that story. It's a wonder we got fixed enough to leave.

Didn't mean to imply that it was. Just a series of neat pic's. It's an Alaska bird....

I got plenty of hours flying 74-1667 at Dyess AFB TX. The mighty Herk is the most amazing plane ever made....in my book.

Try to get t33driver to relate his "near Ace" Herc story. Only 4 kills, the fifth was denied on technicalities, I think. 8)
