From a tv show I've seen several times, there was this refurb shop in the UK refurbing a 109. The mechanic said that they better not destroy the DB engine because it was built to extreme tolerances that would be impossible to achieve. I don't know if he meant actually impossible or just too expensive. In any case, this may have to be considered when talking about a new-built DB.

The Germans already tried it with the Bf 109X. Maybe they thought it was ugly.
