Not a lot of pics available of that area of the AC, silly people shot pics of the cockpit and smiling pilots! Pics of B's are rare enough, shots of the tail, close up while flying...are rarer still.

FWIW, here's the tail skid on the NMUSAF B-25 (a C backdated to more-or-less B configuration.)

So the question stands, is it supposed to retract on takeoff or not. That looks like it should retract, assuming it hasn't been bent by one or more hard smacks with the runway! Wonder what troubles they had with this rig caused them to update with just a big bumper in later models? To delicate?
If we determine it should retract, I will get this edited and shoot one to you Trea for the Museum.

I'm going to venture a guess that it doesn't retract, and that it was not so much of a big bumper added on later, but an aerodynamic fairing over it.

Probably came in handy on those bumpy, PSP runways with full war-loads or damage, I know you don't WANT to smack your tail on the ground, but it can happen......even on modern airliners....THAT has GOT to be an interesting ride!!!! A-380 testing it's tail-dragging parameters!

Back to the model...I have a Revell & a Testors kit of the B model that was given to me. It looks like both kits have the tail bump skid on them. It's been a while since the last kit I built so today I will be going to get more supplies to get started. I will try and get some pics when I get started.
