Spit engine help

Hi All:
I do volunteer work at a small Indiana Museum [url]www.indianamilitarymuseum.org and just finished bringing a Junkers Jumo 004 out of our "weed holding area" and making it somewhat presentable for display. Another engine they want to bring out and display I am told is a Rolls Royce Spitfire engine. Does anyone know where the ID is on these engines? And if it is actually a spit engine? The prop hub is still on it and it has 4-blade wood broken stubs on it. I can e-mail a couple of pictures if you think you can help. (I can't figure out how to post them here)

For posting pics, I have found a free account with Photobucket works pretty well. Once you have uploaded it there, it is just a click and paste away from posting here. As for serial location, I have no idea.

Should have an ID plate on the side of the crankcase.

Hi Frank,

The data plate for both RR and Packard-built Merlins, if still fitted, should be on the left-hand side of the crankcase, below the 2nd cylinder from the front.

If it's got a four-bladed wooden prop then it's likely to be from a Spitfire. Loads of info out there; if you can get a photo posted, I am sure that it will be possible to identify the mark even without a data plate.

Not all Merlins have it there - certainly the Packard built examples do but I have seen much smaller plates on the right hand side towards the rear of the crank-case on UK built engines.

That would make sense, especially depending on which ancilliary items were fitted.
I wonder if the Ford (Manchester) ones had a different placing too.

Thanks guys I was able to find it on a square boss on the front of the engine. It' a Mk66 serial #193941. Now we start looking for parts. Any suggestions?
