Greetings all,

mgawa, you & i are on the same page as to looking for details on warbird rarities!! i'd love to know what the japanese thought of the 109's characteristics. 1 of the things i don't know is did the japanese army or navy test the example / examples??

Nice to find brother soul who think the same- thank you for kind words.

Yes- this machine is tested by Japanese and it is proven not suitable as well it have lower range, that was important as well combat area was large as you know. Some info state that three samples are purchased but I dont know much about.

The Allies code name for the 109E was 'MIKE' the FW-190 was 'FRED' and, yes the Japanese had examples of 190's as well for evaluation. The major thing to come out of the tests on the 109 lead to the Ki-61 being equipped with a licensed (but somewhat adapted) version of the DB 601.

It would indeed be an interesting read. I have seen that the Ki-61 was tested against the bf-109E and a P-40E and outperformed both of them. No specifics unfortunately or who did the testing. If it was Kawasaki it would cause me to wonder about bias of any testing!

i've heard the same. i'm wondering if evironment, heat, humidity was a factor. there were plenty of A-1 performers that were failures outside of their normal operating atmospheres. p- 38 was a marginal performer in the med & europe as an example, but excelled beyond belief in the pacific.
